Clearfield swimmers sweep Lewistown and Indian Valley
Wednesday, January 13, 2010
By Josh Mlot Sports Writer
HYDE - There were delays, officiating issues and lineup changes - due to double-dual meet format - but that didn't stop the Clearfield swimming and diving team Tuesday night.
The host side took to the pool at Robert L. Shearer Natatorium and swam to large margins of victory over thin squads from Lewistown and Indian Valley, with the boys topping them 90-8 and 88-6, respectively. The girls won 77-22 over Lewistown and 86-8 over Indian Valley.
"(Lewistown and Indian Valley) are small," Clearfield head coach Jackie Morrison said, "but they won some events and they have some good swimmers. If they had a team behind them - if they had a little depth - they'd be pushing some people.
"I thought the other teams swam well, and we did get something out of it. It wasn't a waste of our time."
Some of the evening's best performances came from non-winners, as three Clearfield swimmers posted regional qualifying times.
Sophomore Jacob Rollin picked up his first regional qualifying effort, swimming the 100 breast in 1:17.07 to finish second behind teammate Jordan Mumma (1:10.83).
"(He's) done a tremendous job in practice, and it's starting to show in the meets," Morrison said. "Don't let the (small) size fool you, he's a pretty tough little character. And as he grows he'll get better and better because the fundamentals are becoming more sound.
"He looked really good. He went right after it, and you love to a see a confident, aggressive swim like that."
Youth shined through again when freshman Morgen Turner watcher her time in the 50 free drop by .7 seconds as she reached the regional mark with a 29.02 while finishing third in the event.
"The 50 free is a tough event," Morrison said. "She took off over half a second, and that's not easy to do in the 50 free. And for a freshman to make that event, that's a tall order."
Turner also reeled in a personal best in the 100 free, touching the wall in 1:09.77 for third place.
Senior Laura Lumadue finished third in the 500 free, but her time was much more important than her finish. After never nearing the regional qualifier a year ago, Lumadue smashed that mark by 11 seconds, swimming to the finish in 6:29.33.
"She's been in the program for it seems like forever, and she's one of my most consistent swimmers and people," Morrison said. "Just a very, very responsible and accountable and dependable person. She doesn't get much glory as a utility swimmer.
"She just probably had the most memorable swim of her life tonight. The kids just couldn't wait to congratulate her because they know how she busts her butt in practice."
The boys did not drop a single event on the night, as the individual success kicked off in the 200 free.
The Bisons got a couple of standout performances in the race, with Alex Fisher swimming to the win in a personal-best 2:02.60 and teammate Caleb Baas finishing runner-up with a personal best time of 2:08.55. Fisher also gained victory in the 500 free.
Mumma added a second victory to his belt in the 200 IM, edging out teammate Kraig Peterson with a 2:12.68. Peterson swam to the winner's circle in the 100 fly (1:00.52).
Connor Shirey topped the field by over five seconds in the 50 free, and Andrew Smith was twice victorious, with wins in the 100 free and 100 back.
The Bison relays were just as dominant, as Mumma, Fisher, Peterson and Shirey took the top spot in the meet-opening 200 medley relay and again in the 200 free relay. Baas, Smith, Dylan Swisher and John Suhoney closed out the night with a winning swim in the 400 free relay.
The girls got wins in five different individual events from five different girls - Ashley Durandetta (200 IM, 2:39.72), Kaylee Bowser (100 fly, 1:16.70), Brandie Centi (100 free, 1:00.27), Clairisse Peterson (100 back, 1:15.05) and Juliana Mellgard (100 breast, 1:21.06).
The Lady Bisons swept the relay events, with Durandetta, Mellgard, Bowser and Centi in the 200 medley relay, Centi, Peterson, Durandetta and Turner in the 200 free relay and Mellgard, Bowser, Peterson and Candise Day in the 400 free relay.
Clearfield took both the girls and boys 1-meter diving events, as Jessica Shomo (137.25) and Nathan Brzezinski (142.10) jumped into the judges' favor.
District 9 competition is now on the horizon, as Clearfield gets ready to swim at DuBois on Monday. The Lady Beavers are the D-9 defending champs.
"We didn't get to see a lot of the kids swim tonight because we had to change our format for the double dual," Morrison said.
"So we're anxious to get into District 9 where we're three strong in the events and everyone gets to swim and an opportunity to get to improve."
