Clearfield swim teams host Arctic Classic Monday, January 11, 2010 HYDE - The Clearfield swim team hosted the annual Arctic Swim Classic Invitational on Saturday, with the boys finishing fourth out of 12 teams with 160 points and the girls landing seventh out of 13 with 71 points. "Terrific competition," Clearfield head coach Jackie Morrison said. "Those teams that did come were definitely at a very high level. It was a good benchmark for all the teams there." St. Marys took the boys team title, finishing with 210 points, 24 ahead of runner-up Hollidaysburg. On the girls' side, West Allegheny reigned victorious with 276 points, 95 ahead of second-place Jersey Shore. The Bisons notched a handful of top-six efforts, as Jordan Mumma finished third in the 200 free and second in the 100 free, while Alex Fisher grabbed two fourth-place finishes (200 IM, 100 breast). "I thought on the boys side we swam very, very well," Morrison said. "One person who definitely comes to mind is Alex Fisher. He just had a tremendous meet. He definitely took it to another level and was competing right up there with the top guys. For this time of the season, I think he's clearly on the right path." More success came for Kraig Peterson, who swam to second- and fourth-place finishes in the 500 free and 100 fly, respectively, and Connor Shirey, who grabbed fourth in the 50 free. Teaming up, Peterson, Fisher, Shirey and Mumma landed third in the 200 medley relay and second in the event-ending 400 free relay. The Lady Bisons had some nice moments as well, including a sixth-place result for Brandie Centi in the 100 free. Kaylee Bowser swam fifth in the 500 free. "It was definitely a consistent effort (for the girls)," Morrison said. "We're still really waiting for our top girls to really get it going. They need to get back to the times they were swimming last year ... if they want to have a chance at the regional meet and possibly at states." In relay action, Centi and Bowser joined Ashley Durandetta and Juliana Mellgard to finish fifth in the 200 free relay and sixth in the 400 free relay. "Overall, it was definitely a long day and a big meet," Morrison said, "and I think everybody did give a good effort and try their best. "We're going to find out a whole lot more getting into the District 9 season. By the end of January we'll have a good idea of who are serious contenders for state qualifying."
