WESTOVER - At last night's Harmony Area School Board reorganizational meeting, seven members received the oath of office but just one of them is a new member. He is Brent Weaver from Cherry Tree.
Those who were re-elected were William Boring, Darren Dubyak, Susan Gallaher, Betty Kunsman, Shawn McGarvey and Frank Tiesi. Board member Jason Sunderland conducted the swearing in. Melanie Roland is also a board member.
Following the swearing in, the board reorganized with Sunderland named the temporary president.
Leading the board for another year will be Dubyak and Sunderland will serve as vice president. The votes were unanimous except for Weaver abstaining for both.
Boring was selected to be the legislative representative to the Pennsylvania School Boards Association; Sunderland was appointed as delegate to the Clearfield County Career and Technology Center Joint Operating Committee for the 2010-11 school year and McGarvey as alternate.
Weaver was appointed as the delegate to the Central Intermediate Unit No. 10 board for the 2010-11 school year and Roland will be the board designee to the district tax rolls.
The board tabled action on choosing depositories and no motion was made to select Andrews and Beard of Altoona as the solicitor for 2010-11.
The following committee members were appointed: Budget - Tiesi, Dubyak, Roland, Boring; Personnel - Kunsman, Roland, Gallaher, Dubyak; Curriculum - Roland, Sunderland, McGarvey, Boring; Athletic - Tiesi, McGarvey, Roland, Sunderland, Dubyak; Building and Grounds - Roland, Weaver, Dubyak, Sunderland; and Policy - Kunsman, Roland, Gallaher, Boring. Following the appointments, Roland said she wanted the board to be more involved with the committee duties.
The board also set dates for the 2010 meetings. Jan. 11, workshop with regular meeting following, and 25, workshop. The first number for the following is the board meeting and the second is the workshop: Feb. 1 and 22; March 1 and 29; April 5 and 26; May 3 and 24; June 7 and 28; July 5 and 26; Aug. 2 and 30; Sept. 7 and 27; Oct. 4 and 25; Nov. 1 and 30; and the reorganization and regular meeting will be Dec. 6.
Following the reorganization, the board met in executive session until time for the 8 p.m. regular meeting.
At the meeting, the board approved the following:
  • MVS Security to install a door access system to the high school faculty room door at a cost of $1,819.68 and to install additional door access systems in front of the elementary entrance door and the center exterior gymnasium door at a cost of $4,658.04. Total cost paid from Title I stimulus money is $6,477.72.
  • an agreement with Burnside Township to provide winter maintenance for the school parking areas at a cost of $65 per hour for plowing and spreading material; salt, $61.85 per ton; and antiskid, $15 per ton.
  • a donation of $500 to Teen Court.
  • upgrade to Renaissance Learning at a cost of $4,989.30, and $1,395.30 was budgeted.
  • attendance at the following conferences: Robin Kitchen, board secretary and business manager, March 9-12, Hershey Lodge; Terri Butterworth, elementary principal, and instructors Chelsea Heilman Houser, Shannon Andrews and Kelly Born, 21st Century Teacher, Dec. 7-10, Hershey Lodge; Terry McConnell, high school principal, Improving Schools, Jan. 31 through Feb 3, Pittsburgh; Amie Breth and Jason Boring, instructors, PA First Grade Teacher, Dec. 7-8, Harrisburg.
    Approval was given for a field trip for eighth grade to Clearfield County Career and Technology Center Dec. 16 and rewarding Remembering Adam participants by going to the Richland Cinema in Johnstown Saturday.
