DuBois mayor may become manager
Friday, November 06, 2009
By Josh Woods Staff Writer
DUBOIS - DuBois City Councilman Randy Schmidt indicated the search for a city manager has ended with an announcement, at yesterday's city council work session, that a search committee has recommended Mayor John "Herm" Suplizio for the position.
"For several years now we've had a search committee for the manager of the City of DuBois," said Schmidt. "After many months of searching and interviewing, stuff like that, we've come down to the point where we feel we have a very strong candidate for city manager."
Schmidt said he would like Suplizio to think over the decision until Monday's regular council meeting. The city will also entertain the renewal of contracts with the city solicitor and city auditor on Monday.
Secretary Fran Lias reported the city has received two pest control contracts from W.C. Scott, one for one year and one for two years. Suplizio suggested council review the contracts and hold off until January to take action. The city's current wildlife pest control contract expires in February. Suplizio said the city could solicit additional contract offers at that time.
"My question is, how do we know we're going to go with him?" said Suplizio.
Lias said the city could opt to include language in its contract that would ensure the city received reimbursement in the event Scott did not perform his duty.
Acting Police Chief Mike Dilullo gave an October report for the DuBois City Police Department. DuBois PD handled 18 thefts, four burglaries, 23 activated alarms, 18 criminal mischief, seven incidences of forgery or fraud, 37 harassment/assaults, 24 disorderly conducts, two public drunkenness, four driving under the influence, nine trespassing, 17 check welfare/mental health, 36 disturbances (domestics/fights), seven lost or missing persons, 14 animal complaints, 31 traffic accidents/investigations, 25 assists of motorists/escorts, and eight assists of other agencies. The department wrote 112 citations and 16 warnings, 178 parking tickets and performed 67 building or house checks. In total, it responded to 905 calls in the month of October.
Dilullo noted the department assisted company trucks carrying windmill components 25 times this month. He indicated both the city and Sandy Township have assisted a Canadian company and that the township had been checking into whether or not it could be compensated for its transport services.
"I think we should check into this in fairness to the people who are footing the bill," said Councilwoman Diane Bernardo.
Dilullo said if the city does ask for compensation it must also consider other companies with oversized loads.
In other business, council approved:
l awarding a bid for work on the DuBois Place, Regency 1 building in the amount of $436,340 to Allison & Associates.
l authorization to re-advertise for bids for the sale of used trucks.
Monday's meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the city building.
