WEEKEND EVENTS Thursday, November 05, 2009 Weekend Events is a weekly feature of The Progress published to alert readers about events planned by nonprofit organizations or events that benefit the community. All events are open to the public. To have an event included, submit the information in writing to any office of The Progress by noon Tuesday. Late submissions will not be published, nor will submissions that do not include a contact person and daytime telephone number. The Progress does not include bingo, club events that are limited to members and guests only, or yard sales or flea markets by private individuals in the Weekend Events section. The following events are planned this weekend in Progressland. Thursday Art shows The Susquehanna River Arts Center announced a new member's showcase is being held at the Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library. It features the work of Christion Iraca; illustration; and Dan Mohney, photography. This exhibit will be held through Nov. 28. For SRAC information call 765-5621 or 765-5975. --- An art show "The Season of Fall" is being held at the Clearfield Hospital on the first floor. The paintings are the artwork of local artists. The art show is under the direction of Anna Marie Toto and Dottie Evans and assisted by Gloria Rowles. For information call 765-5621 or 765-5975. Home for the Holidays The seventh annual Home for the Holidays celebration sponsored by Curwensville Merchants Association begins Thursday and will continue through Sunday in Curwensville. Various businesses will be hosting open houses, special sales, giveaways and demonstrations. The third annual Fuel Aid concert will be held today at 7 p.m. at the Curwensville Area High School auditorium. Tickets are $5 each and will be sold at the door. Scheduled to perform are CrossOver, Brenda Weber and Harmonious Funk. Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the fuel fund overseen by Curwensville Ministerium that helps families living in Curwensville Area School District. A portion of the funds raised will be matched by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Friday Fish dinner A fish dinner will be served Friday at Columbia firehall from 4-7 p.m. Featured will be baked or fried fish, potatoes, vegetables, macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, roll and dessert. Soup and full salad bar will be available for eat-in only. Prices are $9 for adults and $6 for children. Takeouts are available. Delivery is available by calling 339-6601 on the day of the dinner before 4 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Columbia Fire Co., Osceola Mills. Flea market Hyde Fire Co. will hold a flea market on Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also for sale will be homemade vegetable and ham and bean soup; bring your own containers. The price is $4. All proceeds benefit the building fund. Yard sale An indoor yard sale will be held at the Glen Richey firehall Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon both days. A large variety of items will be for sale. All profits benefit the "Helping Hands Project" of the Mt. Zion and O'Shanter United Methodist Church charge. The project helps people with such things as heating oil and small home repairs. Saturday Auction Lawrence Grange will hold an auction on Saturday at 6 p.m. with Mike and Jerry. They will have new items, seasonal items, frozen food, canned goods, produce and many other items. The kitchen will be open. There will be a 50-50, grab bags and rip-off tickets. Breakfast A breakfast to benefit Caring and Sharing For Kids of Clearfield, Jefferson and Elk counties will be held Saturday from 6-11 a.m. at the Grampian community building. Prices are $5 for adults and $3 for children for the meal that includes a choice of pancakes or buckwheat cakes and sausage or liverwurst. The breakfast is sponsored by Grampian Lions Club. Country music There will be free country music Saturday at 7 p.m. provided by local musicians at Oklahoma Salem firehall on the Oklahoma end. The kitchen will be open. Book fest Fall Book Fest 2009 will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon at Curwensville Public Library, 601 Beech St., Curwensville. The event will feature a free children's book giveaway with books donated by First Book-Clearfield County, book bingo, a fall craft, guest readers, a visit by a book character and refreshments. Football game The public is invited to Chester Hill Hose Co. Saturday to watch the Penn State vs. Ohio football game on its new 8-by-11-foot flat-screen TV. A pig roast dinner will be served throughout the game. There will be a $10 charge at the door. Everyone is asked to drink responsibly. The doors will be open at 2:30 p.m. for the 3:30 p.m. game. Bring a comfortable chair or use those provided by the hose company. Free meal A free hot meal will be served every Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Living Bread Ministries, 628 Daisy St., Clearfield. Spaghetti dinner A spaghetti dinner will be held Saturday from 4-7 p.m. at the Curwensville Lutheran fellowship hall sponsored by Curwensville Area Lutheran Ministry. The cost is $5 per meal. Dinners may be eaten in or taken out. Pow-wow The 10th Annual Clearfield Veterans Pow-Wow will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Clearfield Driving Park at the Expo II Building. There is no admission price charged. See Native American dancing both days, on Saturday from 1-4 and 6-10 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. There will be Native American dancers, singing, Native American vendors, door prizes, refreshments and more. A special celebration honoring all veterans of the armed services is scheduled for Saturday evening. A craft competition will be held Sunday at 10 a.m. A Chinese auction will be held throughout the weekend. Bazaar Women of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Lanse will have its annual bazaar Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the church social room. There will be a lasagna luncheon, baked goods, candies, Chinese auction to benefit the West Branch Food Bank and other items. The public is invited. Football fundraiser The Golden Tide Football Booster Club will sponsor a homemade soup, chili and bake sale Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Curwensville Feed Store. Hot cocoa, coffee, water and soda will also be sold. All proceeds benefit the Curwensville Area High School Football program. Sunday Breakfast The Clearfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1785 will hold a breakfast Sunday at the post home from 7-10 a.m. Dinner St. Michael's in Irvona will hold its annual dinner from on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. The menu includes stuffed cabbages, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a dessert. Prices are $8 for adults and $4 for children younger than 12. Chicken and waffle dinner The Shiloh United Methodist Church is holding a chicken and waffle dinner on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $7. Chicken dinner A boneless chicken breast dinner will be served Sunday at Sandy Ridge Fire Co. from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The menu is boneless chicken breast, potatoes, stuffing, gravy, vegetables and dessert. Prices are $8 for adults and $4 for children younger than 12, and those younger than 3 eat for free. Takeouts will be available. The meal is all-you-can-eat when eating in. Turkey shoot Cooper Township Sportsmen's Club will hold a turkey shoot Sunday at the range in Winburne starting at 2 p.m. The cost is $1.50 per round.
