No injuries in 14-car train derailment
Friday, October 30, 2009
No injuries were reported in a train derailment that happened yesterday in Lawrence Town-ship. According to Tim Potts, division manager for R. J. Corman Railroad Co., the derailment occurred at approximately 4:07 p.m. in the area of the West Branch Valley Subdivision where the railroad crosses the Susquehanna River at milepost 1.9.
According to Potts, the actual cause has yet to be determined and the investigation is ongoing. However, he said the accident was not due to human error. Approximately 14 cars were derailed in the incident and all remained upright. Potts said the cars were hauling coal and none lost their load.
Traffic in the Goldenrod area along U.S. Route 322 was rerouted, and the road was closed for approximately two hours.
