Residents are reminded not to participate in any sweepstake-type events where they are contacted by an unknown person by telephone or by mail and told they have won a large sum of money.
Some signs that it is fraudulent include the unknown individual requesting taxes be paid on the winnings upfront before receipt of the prize money or a request that a portion of the winnings be sent back after payment has been rendered. Not being able to recall entering any sweepstake is also a sign the information is not legitimate.
Anyone who suspects they may have been the target of a scam is asked to contact police before cashing a check or sending money from a bank account. Even if a check looks legitimate and initially clears, it can later be found fraudulent and the individual who cashed it is held responsible for repaying the full amount to the bank.
