Clearfield shut out by State College, 6-0
Thursday, October 01, 2009
By Rich Murawski Assistant Sports Editor
HYDE - The State College girls soccer team used a pinpoint passing game and patient offense to maintain possession for much of Wednesday's game with host Clearfield.
The result was a 6-0 win for the Lady Lions at the Bison Sports Complex.
"Every player on that team, whether it is a starter or a sub, can pass, move and receive," Clearfield head coach Jen Wright said. "They just played basic soccer."
The high skill level of State College coupled with a Clearfield team that had trouble connecting passes led to a few lopsided statistics. State College outshot the Lady Bisons, 20-1, and held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
"We were in a funk, and just couldn't get out of it," Wright said. "We weren't going hard to the ball like we did in the game against Hollidaysburg. I don't know if we were tired or just down today. We did improve some in the second half."
State College got on the board just 5:05 into the game when Lauren Eck chipped the ball over Lady Bison keeper Brandie Centi's head and into the corner of the net after receiving a nice pass from Kelsey Graham.
Kelsey Gill made it 2-0 at 22:43 when she took a pass from Ally Reid at the 18, turned her hips and fired a shot past Centi.
At 38:15, Lauren Kenney tiptoed through several Clearfield defenders in the box then booted it by Centi for a 3-0 halftime lead.
"It just seemed like we were a step behind," Wright said. "It was unfortunate to come out flat, especially against a team like State College."
Graham and Rebecca Whitney scored goals 46 seconds apart early in the second half to up the Lady Lion lead to 5-0. Heather Kerr capped the scoring at 69:52.
Clearfield's only shot came with less than two minutes remaining when Candice Morgan boomed a ball on net from about 30 yards out.
Morgan was part of a defensive core that Wright thought played well in the face of constant State College pressure all game long.
"Lisa Bumbarger had another strong game," Wright said. "So did Morgan, (Janell) Zalno, (Emily) Barger and (Sabrina) Schwartz."
Centi made 10 saves in goal for Clearfield.
The Lady Bisons (3-6-1) are back in action Monday, playing host to DuBois.
