Clearfield rallies to beat Indian Valley, 48-33 Saturday, September 19, 2009 By Brian Carson For The Progress LEWISTOWN - Sophomore quarterback Curtis Frye rushed for three touchdowns and passed for two to lead Clearfield back from a 19-point deficit and rally for a 48-33 victory over Indian Valley on Friday. Down 33-14 in the third quarter, the Bison (2-1) put up 34 unanswered points, outscoring the Warriors (1-2) by a 34-6 count in the second half. Clearfield finished the game with 410 yards of total offense. "It was a tale of two halves. We didn't play well, that's for sure," said Clearfield head coach Tim Janocko. "I told the kids at half they didn't do a good job, but we're only down by 13, and can play better football. "To our kids' credit, they didn't give up. They kept fighting and got us back in the game. I told them if we could get within six points in the fourth we'd have a chance, and that's what happened. We took advantage of some turnovers and made some plays." Trey Campman started the Bison comeback with a 33-yard reception and nine-yard TD jaunt that made the score 33-21 with 8:23 to go in the period. The first big momentum-swinger for Clearfield came midway through the third quarter when Campman stepped in front of a wobbly Cody Heane pass for the pick. Five plays later Frye snuck in from the one for the score. The PAT failed to make the score 33-27. "The turnover was the play of the game. It changed the whole momentum in their favor," said Indian Valley coach Tom Sheaffer. "We played a decent game, but made a couple of big mistakes in the second half that cost us dearly. It's a tough loss, but we have to regroup and get ready for next week." On the Warriors' next drive, Clearfield LB Jack Mellgard picked off Heane's pass and raced 51 yards to the Indian Valley 11. Frye took it in from two yards out, giving the Bisons their first lead of the game at 34-33 with 8:32 left in regulation. "It was our first road trip with a young football team, and I think some of our kids were shocked at the beginning with the speed Indian Valley had," said Janocko. "We had some kids like Derek (Morgan) and Trey (Campman) who stepped up for us tonight. We spread the ball around, which is what we wanted to do." The Bisons closed out the scoring with a five-yard run from Morgan and a 14-yard scamper from Frye, who finished with 267 yards passing and 62 rushing. "I have a sophomore quarterback who's feeling his way through," said Janocko. "He made some bad decisions and he made some good decisions. It's all part of the learning process." Indian Valley was led by Zach Hassinger, who ran for 163 yards and scored four touchdowns. The junior had scoring runs of 95, 42, and five yards. The Warriors finished with 366 total yards with 245 coming in the first half. "Zach had a real strong game for us. He took advantage of some nice holes from the offensive line," said Sheaffer. "He cramped up some in the second half and we didn't get to use him as much. But he had a great game, and we can build off this." Morgan, who finished with five catches for 177 yards, highlighted the first half for the Bison with a 70-yard TD reception. "We had some dumb penalties that we have to eliminate, but overall this is a big win for us," said Janocko. "It doesn't get any easier, but being 2-1 heading into the rest of the season is good for us." There was some cause for concern for the Clearfield faithful when Campman collapsed on the field at the end of the game and remained down for almost 15 minutes. He walked off the field under his own power with the diagnosis being dehydration. Clearfield returns to action Friday at Tyrone.
