Brockway man killed in accident
Monday, September 14, 2009
BROCKWAY - State police at DuBois reported a fatal crash occurred yesterday at 3:15 p.m. on U.S. Route 219 one mile south of Brockway. Jefferson County Coroner Bernard Snyder pronounced Shane Edward Horner, 18, of Brockway dead at the scene.
According to a police report, the crash occurred when Horner was traveling north on U.S. 219 when it entered the east berm, traveled approximately 193 feet north along the berm and for a short distance through the edge of a yard. Horner apparently overcorrected to the left and the vehicle traveled northwest, crossing into the southbound lane into the path of a vehicle driven by James Aldcroft of Ontario.
After impact, Aldcroft's vehicle rotated approximately 90 degrees counterclockwise and traveled approximately 10 feet, coming to rest facing east along the west berm. Horner's vehicle came to rest facing northwest in the southbound lane.
Aldcroft and one of his passengers, Patricia Aldcroft, were flown via medical helicopter to Altoona Regional Health System. James Aldcroft was then flown to Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. Two other passengers in Aldcroft's vehicle, Donald and Gail Layzell, were transported via ambulance to DuBois Regional Medical Center. No updates have been provided on their injuries. All of the occupants in Aldcroft's, as well as Horner, were wearing a seat belt.
Brockway Fire Department, Brockway Emergency Medical Services, DuSan Ambulance, Falls Creek Fire Department, STAT MedEvac and the coroner assisted troopers at the scene.
