East tops West, 37-22, in PSFCA All-Star game Saturday, June 20, 2009 By Jon Christoff Sports Writer ALTOONA - As the final seconds ticked off the clock at the 9th annual PSFCA East-West Game in Altoona on Friday night, Clearfield quarterback Jarrin Campman had nearly equaled the East squad's total offensive output through the air. Campman had a solid showing for the West, as he completed eight of 12 attempts for 144 yards and three touchdowns, but his team committed seven turnovers and the East - which gained just 153 yards of total offense - capitalized on the short field to rally for a 37-22 win. "There was a lot of trash-talking going on," said Campman. "It really fueled the players and fueled the game, but I thought it was a good game overall. "It was nice that they picked me to play with these guys. I was chosen as one of the top 80 kids in Pennsylvania, so it was nice knowing that." The game was scoreless until Campman got to work right before halftime. Hollidaysburg's Justin Gildea intercepted a pitch-pass to give the West possession at the East 38, where Campman began the march toward the first points of the contest. After scrambling out of bounds on a 3-yard gain, Campman looked backside from the four-wide set to his left and connected with Gateway's Josh Vermeulen for a 35-yard score. The extra point made it 7-0 with 1:08 left in the half. "We have some real good athletes on the team," Campman said. "They made it easy for me, and I just laid it out there. ... It's really easy to click with (the receivers). They know what you're thinking and where you're going to throw the ball." A fumble recovery two plays later, again, gave the West the short field, and Matthew Oczypok (Pittsburgh Central Catholic) booted a 25-yard field goal to make it a 10-0 game at the half. Campman finished the half a perfect 4-for-4 for 90 yards with two of the completions hauled in by Penn State recruit Christian Kuntz (Camp Hill, Trinity) for 55 yards. After a strong end to the first half, the West was bitten by the turnover bug and not even Campman was immune. Early in the third quarter, a bad snap on a punt set up the East for its first touchdown, while a West fumble on the ensuing series led to the touchdown that gave the East the lead for good. John Nurthen (Great Valley) punched in the East's first score from three yards out, while Zach Zulli completed a 5-yard pass to Jared Bausch to put the East in front 14-10 after three quarters. Once the clock started counting down to start the fourth, the floodgates opened for the East, which scored three touchdowns with its offense running just 10 plays the entire quarter. Campman's lone mistake resulted in six points for the East, as Thomas Ryan (Father Judge) intercepted a pass off a deflection and ran 49 yards for the score. A punt return and a safety later, the West found itself in a 30-10 hole with just over seven minutes to play. Campman energized his team with a long pass to Kuntz, who earned a scholarship from the Nittany Lions as a wide receiver despite playing running back his entire career. Kuntz hauled in a 66-yard scoring strike from Campman with 4:08 to play, and capped the scoring on a fade pattern from 12 yards out with 1:38 to go. Kuntz finished the day with 106 yards on five catches. "(Campman) was quiet all week," said Kuntz, "but the biggest thing at my position is your relationship with your quarterback. We bonded real well throughout the week in drills. He's a great quarterback and a great prospect at the next level." On the 66-yard bomb, Kuntz beat the defensive back on a post pattern, and Campman put the ball up for his 6-foot-5 target to go get. Kuntz reeled it in and had clear sailing into the end zone. "He's real big, fast and he has good hands," Campman said of Kuntz. "He's actually never played receiver because he was a running back this season. He's a good receiver and a good player." The two strikes from Campman to Kuntz sandwiched the East's last score, as J.C. Smolke returned a fumble 26 yards to paydirt. The East upped its mark in the event to 6-3. East 37 West 22
