Campus Roundup: Area athletes helping their teams in the postseason
Thursday, May 07, 2009

By Jon Christoff Sports Writer
Several local athletes had their season wrap up recently, while others are in the thick of conference playoffs. Here's a look at how each has fared:

Baseball

Matt Adams, Slippery Rock: Adams and his Slippery Rock teammates dropped an 8-5 decision to Kutztown on Wednesday in the first round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, and may have had their season ended as a result of the inclement weather.

The PSAC tournament must be completed by Friday, and, if the rains continue, only the four winning teams would continue.

Adams, who was 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the loss, finished the regular season by leading the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in nearly every statistical category. The former Mountie backstop led the conference with a .497 batting average, 90 hits, 24 doubles, 64 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .862. His 14 home runs ranked him second.

Adam Jury, Slippery Rock: Jury went 2-for-5 with a run scored in The Rock's conference tournament loss to Kutztown on Wednesday.

Jury finished the regular season with a .399 average for Slippery Rock, which qualified for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs. The Clearfield alum saw his 11-game hitting streak snapped, but bounced back and has hit safely in 22-of-24 games. Jury has 11 doubles, three home runs and 41 RBIs for The Rock. Jury has also tallied 43 runs scored.

Paul Keith, Penn State-Altoona: Keith lifted the Lions to a series win over Pitt-Bradford in the best-of-three Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference and was tabbed the AMCC Pitcher of the Week for his efforts.

The Mo Valley graduate scattered three hits and allowed one run in picking up his seventh win in eight decisions, while striking out nine and walking one.

Grady Luzier, Penn State-Altoona: Luzier also played a pivotal role in Penn State-Altoona's ousting of Pitt-Bradford. A West Branch alum, Luzier smacked a two-run home run to give the Lions the lead in the third and deciding game, and had seven hits and three RBIs in the series. Luzier is currently hitting .450 for Penn State-Altoona, which takes to Erie for the AMCC Final Four this weekend.

Matt McCamley, Lock Haven: The Eagles made their first postseason appearance in seven years on Tuesday, only to drop a 7-3 decision to West Chester. The P-O graduate finished the season with 45 starts for Lock Haven (21-32) and currently has a .302 batting average, which ranks him second on the team. McCamley also has eight doubles, a home run and 31 RBIs to his credit. Lock Haven's consolation game on Wednesday against Shippensburg in the double-elimination tournament was postponed because of rain.

Bart McGary, Pitt-Bradford: McGary and Pitt-Bradford were ousted from the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference playoffs after dropping the last two games of a best-of-three series at Penn State-Altoona last season.

McGary, who played for Curwensville, had two doubles and three RBIs for the Panthers in their win over the Lions, who outslugged Pitt-Bradford 16-8 in the third game to win the series.

McGary finished his season with a finished with a .337 average in 29 starts to go along with eight doubles, two home runs and a team-high 29 RBIs.

Tyler Noel, Mansfield: The Mounties dropped a heartbreaking 14-13 loss to top-seeded Mercyhurst in the opening round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday. Mansfield trailed 10-3 before rallying for nine unanswered runs, only to fall in the bottom of the ninth.

Noel, a Glendale grad, still sits at 2-6 with an ERA of 5.21.

Philip Solley, Pitt-Bradford: Solley had a solid showing in the final games of the season for the Panthers, as he collected six hits in four contests before Pitt-Bradford's season came to an end at the hands of Penn State-Altoona.

The former Curwensville catcher scored the only run in the second game of the AMCC series, and ended his season with a .272 average. Solley started 26 games for the Panthers, where he drove in 15 runs and scored 22 while throwing out 10-of-32 baserunners attempting to steal.

B.J. Stephens, Mount Aloysius: The Mounties' season came to an end at the hands of Pitt-Greensburg in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament last weekend. Mount Aloysius dropped the first two games of the three-game set, 7-4 and 18-5.

A former Mo Valley player, Stephens finished with one hit in two plate appearances.

Dylan Viehdorfer, Geneva College: Viehdorfer is currently 1-2 on the mound for the Golden Tornadoes with a 6.75 ERA. Viehdorfer, a former West Branch standout, has appeared in six games and has two starts under his belt. Viehdorfer has logged 17 1/3 innings, issued three walks, struck out six and has earned a save.

Softball

Alanna Luzier, Penn State-Altoona: Luzier and the Lady Lions wrapped up the season with a doubleheader split with Juniata, and finished their season at 7-27.

The first-year player from Clearfield was third on the team with a .314 average, and leads the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference with 16 stolen bases. Luzier finished her campaign with 33 hits, seven of which were doubles, 21 runs scored and six RBIs.

Brittany Pataky, Lock Haven: Pataky and the Lady Eagles captured the school's fourth-straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship after defeating No. 15 Bloomsburg, 8-1, in the finals.

Lock Haven, which stands at 41-5 and is ranked third nationally, is the top-seeded team in the Division II Atlantic Region Tournament today through Sunday.

Track and Field

John Bowman, Penn State-Behrend: Bowman, a sophomore, finished the Mason-Dixon Conference championships with a pair of Top 5 finishes to earn all Mason-Dixon Conference honors. The Clearfield graduate was third in the javelin with a throw of 164-feet, 2-inches, and fourth in the discus with a distance of 125-9. Bowman also was seventh in the hammer throw, as he set a Penn State-Behrend record with a toss of 107-9.

Michael Johnson, Penn State-Behrend: Like Bowman, Johnson had a big day for the Lions at the conference championships. Johnson turned in his best time of the season with a 59.38 in the 400 hurdles.

Penn State-Behrend finished third in the meet.
