Campus Roundup: Area athletes performing well
Wednesday, April 29, 2009
By Josh Mlot Sports Writer
With the spring campaign approaching the end of the regular season, a number of former local athletes have hit their stride at the collegiate level and are helping their teams contend for postseason bids. Here's a look at some of those recent performances:

Track and Field
Michael Johnson, Penn State Behrend: Johnson finished second in the 400 hurdles at the Westminster Invitational on April 18 with a time of 1:00.2 in the finals. The former Clearfield athlete also finished third in the high jump and fifth in the triple jump.

Behrend grabbed the top spot in the men's team standings with 252 points.

John Bowman, Penn State Behrend: The Clearfield graduate finished sixth in the javelin at the Westminster Invitational, with a preliminary toss of 49.75 meters, setting up a finals throw of 46.21. He also got points for his team by finishing eighth in the discus.

Ryan Jones, Westminster: Jones grabbed the 10th spot in the 800-meter run with a 2:08.21 during the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday. The Westminster men finished fifth at the meet.

Nate Shadeck, Slippery Rock: Shadeck, a Clearfield graduate, bested the field in the 400 hurdles as Slippery Rock ran at the Red Flash Open at St. Francis University on Saturday. He finished with a time of 54.25.

Rebecca Shiner, Westminster: Former Lady Bison Shiner continued her solid season with a win in the 800 run at the PAC Championships. Her time of 2:18.90 helped the Westminster Lady Titans win their second consecutive conference title.

Westminster returns to action on Friday at the Toledo Rocket Invitational.

Baseball

Matt Adams, Slippery Rock: The former Mountie standout, now a junior at Slippery Rock, singled home the winning run for an 8-7 win over Wheeling Jesuit on Monday. The Rock also took home Game 2 of the doubleheader, 10-5, in the final day of the regular season. Adams had four hits and four RBIs on the afternoon.

Adams finished the campaign with 24 doubles, tying the school record he set as a freshman. His 64 RBIs is the third-highest in program history, while his 64 runs scored is two shy of the season record.

Adams' .497 batting average is 11 points higher than the current school record, and his 14 round-trippers is good enough for second on the school's single-season list.

Slippery Rock wrapped things up at 36-14 overall.

Matt Curtis, Allegany College of Maryland: Curtis knocked a double for the Trojans in doubleheader action on Saturday, but Allegany fell by a score of 4-2.

A.J. Czap, Allegany College of Maryland: Czap, a Philipsburg-Osceola graduate, ripped a double in a 10-0 win over Westmoreland County Community College in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Sunday. He also picked up a double in an 11-5 loss to Dundalk on Saturday.

Adam Jury, Slippery Rock: Jury was 1-for-2 for The Rock in a 10-5 win over Wheeling Jesuit in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Monday. The former Bison shortstop also had two walks on the day and finished the regular season batting .399 with 43 runs scored and 41 RBIs.

Chris Kechisen, Allegany College of Maryland: Ketchisen was the winning pitcher in a 10-0 route of Westmoreland on Sunday. The victory pushed his record on the mound this season to 8-1.

Paul Keith, Penn State Altoona: Keith picked up a complete-game victory in an 11-7 win over Mount Aloysius on Saturday, clinching a No. 3 seed in the playoffs for the Lions. His sixth win tied a school single-season record.

Penn State Altoona moved to 23-10 and will wrap up the regular season this week before playoff action begins this weekend.

Grady Luzier, Penn State Altoona: The former West Branch standout earned honors as Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Week after helping the Lions go 3-1. During that time he batted .466, including a 2-for-4 day with a double, a home run and six RBIs against Mount Aloysius in a game that clinched a No. 3 seed in the conference tournament.

The sophomore now has 45 RBIs on the year - third in the AMCC - and is in the top five in eight statistical categories.

Matt McCamley, Lock Haven: McCamley helped his team to a 7-4 win in Game 1 of a doubleheader against Gannon on Saturday. He picked up two hits, including a double, and two RBIs in the contest. He grabbed another two hits in a 10-6 Game 2 victory.

The Bald Eagles finished the regular season at 21-31 and will start the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs on Monday.

Bart McGary, Pitt-Bradford: McGary was 1-for-6 with two runs scored and one knocked in during a doubleheader against Medaille on Monday. The Panthers picked up wins in both games - 6-5 and 5-2 - as they pushed their record above .500 to 15-14. McGary has started 27 games this season and is batting .330 with 26 RBIs.

Pitt-Bradford will travel to Penn State Altoona on Saturday for an AMCC play-in double-header.

Philip Solley, Pitt-Bradford: Solley was 2-for-3 with a run scored and one knocked in during a 6-5 win over Medaille on Saturday. The Curwensville alum is batting .259 on the year with 18 runs scored.

Ryan Mostyn, IUP: Mostyn helped the Crimson Hawks to a 5-0 win over Bloomsburg in the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader, going 1-for-4 with a run scored.

IUP dropped the second game 14-1 as the P-O graduate went 1-for-2.

The Hawks finished the regular season at 22-26 with Mostyn batting .283 and starting 47 of the 48 games he played - more than anyone else on the team.

Tyler Noel, Mansfield: Noel gave up one earned run over 1 1/3 innings in a relief appearance during Saturday's 17-13 loss to East Stroudsburg in the opener of a doubleheader. The Mounties posted a comeback win in the second game to secure a PSAC playoff berth.

The former Glendale hurler has posted a 5.21 ERA in 48 1/3 innings pitched with 43 strikeouts.

Drew Westover, UPJ: Westover was 1-for-3 with two ribbies in a 7-3 Game 1 win over West Liberty State in doubleheader action on Sunday. The Flinton native repeated that performance in a Game 2 10-5 loss.

Westover is batting .311 with 25 RBIs as the Mountain Cats (29-15) ready themselves for the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament later this week.

Softball
Alanna Luzier, Penn State Altoona: The Clearfield graduate was named the Penn State Altoona Athlete of the Week after hitting .462 with three runs scored and three stolen bases in three attempts. On the season, the freshman is batting .320 with 20 runs scored.

The Lady Lions are 6-26 on the season.

Brittany Pataky, Lock Haven: The No. 3 Lady Eagles (40-5) pounded Shippensburg 11-1 in the first round of the PSAC tournament on Saturday.

Pataky is batting .105 in 19 at-bats this season.

Rachelle Yarger, Clarion: The Lady Eagles wrapped up their season back on April 19 with a 5-33 record.

Yarger finished the year hitting .200 while appearing in 22 games.
