Campus Roundup: Area athletes shining
Tuesday, December 02, 2008
By Josh Mlot Sports Writer
Fall sports have all but wrapped up and the winter season is here, with a number of local athlete's participating at colleges across the country. Here's a glance at what some of those individuals are doing.

Wrestling

Brad Pataky, Clearfield: The former Bison, now a redshirt sophomore at Penn State, was one of only three winners for his team on Nov. 21 as the No. 14 Nittany Lions fell to No. 4 Cornell 24-10.

The 125-pounder put together three escapes and a takedown for a 9-6 win.

Pataky was also a three-match winner on Nov. 23. Pataky shut out Ross Gitomer 3-0 in a 19-15 Penn State win over No. 24 Virginia, took an 18-3 technical fall against Kyle Fluke in a 24-16 victory over No. 15 Edinboro and shut down Tyler Malmburg with a 16-0 tech fall in a 36-8 topping of SUNY-Binghamton.

Pataky is now 6-3 on the year.

Matt Kyler, Clearfield: The Army junior moved through to the finals of the Body Bar Invitational at Cornell on Nov. 22, defeating Eric McGill (Cornell) 10-1, Anthony Priore (Sacred Heart) 14-4 and Desi Green (Buffalo) 4-3.

The No. 1 seed at 149 pounds just missed out in the finals, slipping 4-3 to Boise State's Jason Chamberlain. Boise State took the tournament win, with Army finishing tied for fourth.

Kyler was ranked No. 6 nationally by Amateur Wrestling News and No. 9 by USA Today, and is now 10-2 overall (4-0 in dual meets).

Kyle Keane, Clearfield: Wrestling for Pitt-Johnstown, Keane won his 165-pound bout by a 9-7 decision over Seth Phalen to help his team open its dual meet schedule with an 18-16 win over West Liberty State (W. Va.) on Nov. 21.

Keane is ranked No. 2 nationally in Division II and No. 1 in the East Region.

Tommy Barger, Clearfield: The Lycoming sophomore hit the mat in one of his team's three matches at the Messiah College Duals on Nov. 22, falling to York's Taylor Ulm 7-5.

The Warriors are now 4-2 after topping York and Kutztown but losing to undefeated Shippensburg. Barger is 2-2 with one major decision.

Football

Tanner Kelly, Clearfield: The Albright junior helped lead the Lions to an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division III South Atlantic Bowl win on Nov. 22, throwing for 129 yards and a touchdown while adding 62 yards on the ground. Albright topped Montclair State 42-14 to finish the season at 8-3.

Kelly was also named to the 2008 Middle Atlantic Conference first team as a punter after averaging 37.2 yards per punt. He was named the conference's Special Teams Player of the Week three times during the season.

As quarterback he finished the season with 1,795 passing yards and 15 TDs, and led the MAC in passing efficiency at 62.2 percent and a 123.6 rating.

Andrew Janocko, Clearfield: The former Bison was the holder on Conor Lee's only kick of the day, an extra point during Pitt's 19-15 win over West Virginia on Friday. The win was the Panthers' second straight over their Backyard Brawl rivals and prevented West Virginia from winning the Big East.

Pittsburgh is 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the Big East, and will close out the regular season at Connecticut on Saturday.

Swimming and Diving

John Lytle, Clearfield: Lytle won three individual events but Notre Dame dropped its Nov. 21 meet to No. 11 Ohio State, 172.5-86.5. The Irish junior finished first in the 50 free (20.84 seconds), the 100 free (45.85) and the 200 free. His 1:39.57 in the last event was a season best.

Lytle also swam a 46.48 first leg of the 400 free relay, but his team let the lead slip away to finish second. The former Bison standout has 11 individual wins and two second-place finishes in dual meets. Notre Dame is 3-3 on the season.

Brandon Good, Clearfield: The Lycoming senior finished fourth in the 100 butterfly and swam legs in the 200 medley and 200 free relay teams, but the Warriors fell to visiting Misericordia 106-99 on Thanksgiving.

Lycoming is 2-3 on the season.

John Bodle, Clearfield: Bodle, now a sophomore at Westminster, brought home a fifth-place finish in the 200 fly in his team's losing effort to Washington & Jefferson.

Falling 154-140, Westminster is now 1-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference after topping Wooster (Ohio) 151-132.

Chris Bodle, Clearfield: The Westminster sophomore swam a 52.92 second leg in the 400 free relay, as his relay team finished sixth against Washington & Jefferson.

Ryan Sayers, Clearfield: Sayers had a strong week for Washington & Jefferson last week, as the senior diver placed third in the 1-meter with 179.55 points and third in the 3-meter with 162.30 points in his school's 154-140 victory Westminster.

Sayers was also third in both events as the Presidents fell to Case Western Reserve, and fourth in each dive category in a win over Kenyon. Washington & Jefferson is now 4-2 overall and 1-0 in PAC competition.

Volleyball

Erin Albert, Philipsburg-Osceola: Albert wrapped up her college career with 13 kills against La Verne in the national semifinals on Nov. 21, but Juniata fell 3-2 to end its Division III tournament run.

The Lady Eagles finished their season at 35-5.

Men's Basketball

Todd Hryn, Clearfield: The Pitt-Greensburg freshman pitched in three points, two rebounds and an assist off the bench as the Bobcats gave Division II Seton Hill a scare but fell 82-75 on Friday.

Hryn has started in three of his team's four games and is averaging five points per game on the young season, including a high of 10 points against Hiram (Ohio) on Nov. 21. Pitt-Greensburg is 0-4 on the year.
