Weekend Events is a weekly feature of The Progress published to alert readers about events planned by nonprofit or not-for-profit organizations or events that benefit the community.

All events are open to the public.

To have an event included, submit the information in writing to any office of The Progress by noon Tuesday. Late submissions will not be published, nor will submissions that do not include a contact person and daytime telephone number.

The Progress does not include bingo, club events that are limited to members and guests only, or yard sales or flea markets by private individuals in the Weekend Events section.

The following events are planned this weekend in Progressland.

Thursday

Art exhibit

Susquehanna River Art Center's 25th annual Juried Art Show continues at the Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library.

The exhibit of 50 works of art by area artists can be seen during regular library hours, Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit will close Nov. 15.

Home for the Holidays

The sixth annual Home for the Holidays celebration in Curwensville begins today and continues through Saturday. The festival is sponsored by the Curwensville Merchants Association.

Participating businesses and nonprofit groups will have open houses, demonstrations, workshops and other activities. A complete listing is available on the merchants' Web site, www.curwensvillemerchants.com.

The second annual Fuel Aid concert will begin today at 7 p.m. at Curwensville Area High School's auditorium. Five musical groups and two soloists will be performing. Tickets are $5 each and are available at the door.

Raffle tickets to win a ton of fuel sponsored by Curwensville Feed Store and Curwensville Anglers Restocking Program will also be sold at the door. Tickets are $1 each. The winner will be announced Monday and will receive a choice of a ton of premium wood pellets or anthracite coal.

Proceeds from both ticket sales will be donated to the Curwensville Ministerium's fuel fund to benefit less fortunate families living in Curwensville Area School District.

Friday

Fish dinner

A fish dinner will be held Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Osceola Mills firehall.

Featured will be baked or fried fish, potatoes, stewed tomatoes, vegetable, dessert and a full salad bar for dine-in only. Prices are $9 for adults and $6 for children. Takeouts and delivery are available. Call 339-6601 Friday by 4 p.m. for deliveries only.

Saturday

Bake sale

A bake sale will be held Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Philips Hotel lobby on Presqueisle Street in Philipsburg.

Proceeds will help fund Holt Memorial Library's summer reading program.

Christmas/holiday bazaars

Allemansville United Methodist Church will hold its 21st annual Christmas bazaar Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the church basement.

There will be crafts for the holidays and gift-giving. Also, baked goods, homemade soups and sandwiches will be available for eat-in or takeout.

The United Methodist Women will hold a holiday bazaar at East Ridge Harmony United Methodist Church Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be homemade vegetable and chicken soup sold by the quart, theme baskets, craft table, vendors, bake sale, candy, pierogies, cookie trays and flea market table. Lunch will be served, and includes soup, sandwich, pie and drink.

Gethsemane United Methodist Church, Allport, will hold a holiday bazaar Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be crafts, baked goods, fruitcakes, homemade soup and white elephant items. Lunch will also be served.

Holiday craft fair

Halfmoon Christian Fellowship Church, located along state Route 550 near Stormstown, will hold a holiday craft fair Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Crafts, Christmas and seasonal items, homemade soup, baked goods and lunch items will be available.

Holiday photos with Santa

The Animal Welfare Council will host holiday photos with Santa Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Waggin' Trains, 1226 S. Second St., Clearfield.

All pets are welcome to pose with Santa against a professionally decorated backdrop. Their humans will receive five photos on a disc inside a decorated jewel box for $8.

Jewelery sale

The Women's Ministry Group of Glendale Assembly of God Church will hold a jewelry sale Saturday from 1-3 p.m. in the fellowship hall on Utahville Road. Everyone is welcome.

Museum open

The Korb House Museum, located at 836 State St., Curwensville, home of the Curwensville-Pike Township Historical Society, will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with two special programs.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., local author Julie Rae Rickard will be signing copies of her latest book, "Around Curwensville." Sales will benefit the historical society. During this time visitors can register to win a free 8-by-10-inch of their favorite photograph from the book.

Beginning at 1 p.m. visitors can make and take home a Victorian-era Christmas ornament. They can also learn about and sample candy available  today  that  had  its  beginnings  before  the  Civil  War.

Open mic night

Open mic night, hosted by Mark and Shawna Wurster, will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Clearfield Arts Studio Theatre in Clearfield. Prices are $3 for general admission or $2 for those performing.

Performers can sing, play a musical instrument, do a dance routine, read poetry or perform a comedic routine. All performances should be family friendly and no more than five to seven minutes long.

There will be two sets and performers can do something for each half.

Quilt show

Wips and Stitches Quilt Club, Treasure Lake, will hold its 2008 Quilt Show Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lake View Lodge, Treasure Lake.

Admission is free and a raffle for door prizes will be held. The event will feature the groups' projects from the past year, works in progress and family heirlooms or antique quilts. Several members will demonstrate quilting techniques.

Shoe Bank

Trinity United Methodist Church, 121 S. Front St., Philipsburg, will hold its Shoe Bank Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon.

Children from infants to age 18 will receive a new pair of sneakers for free. They must have an Access card or CHIP card. The child must be present to be measured and receive the shoes.

Children will receive a pair of sneakers every six months; those younger than 3 will receive a new pair every three months.

Sneaker Closet

The Sneaker Closet at Trinity Methodist Church, located at Second and Walnut streets in Clearfield, will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Children from newborns to age 18 who have Access or CHIP cards may receive sneakers, a pair of socks, a book and a stuffed animal. Children must be present to be fitted properly, bring their Access or CHIP cards and be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Veterans Pow Wow

The ninth annual Clearfield Veterans Day Pow Wow will be held Saturday and Sunday at Clearfield Area Middle School. Dance sessions will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 12:30 p.m. A craft contest will be held Sunday at 9:30 a.m. There will be a trader's row, food and beverages.

Admission prices are $3 for adults, $2 for youth and free for children younger than 6. Participants, veterans and Scouts are admitted free if they are wearing their uniform.

Sunday

Breakfast

Breakfast will be served Sunday from 7-10 a.m. at the Clearfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.

Christmas fair

St. Barbara's Annual Christmas Fair will be held at St. Barbara's Church social hall in Houtzdale Sunday. A chicken dinner with salad bar will be served from noon to 2 p.m. Prices are $8 for adults and $3 for children 5 and younger. There will be a bake sale, Chinese auction and holiday raffle with the drawing at 2 p.m. Orders will be taken for Christmas pierogies.

Dinners

A roast beef dinner will be held Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Glen Hope firehall.

The menu includes roast beef, mashed potatoes, vegetable, coleslaw or applesauce, roll, drink and dessert. Price are $8 for adults and $3 for children. Takeouts will be available.

A ham dinner will be held Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Community Volunteer Fire Co. of Mahaffey. Dinner includes ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, roll, dessert and drink. Price are $6.50 for adults and $4.50 for children.

A turkey dinner will be held Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mountain Top Fire Station in Sandy Ridge. The menu will include turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, vegetable, roll and dessert. Takeouts will be available and the meal is all-you-can-eat. Prices are $7 for adults, $3 for children and kids younger than 3 eat free.

A ham potpie dinner will be held at Shiloh United Methodist Church on Sunday serving from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The menu includes ham potpie, applesauce, roll, and a homemade dessert. Prices are $7.50 for adults and $4 for age 12 and under. There will be door prizes. Eat-in or takeouts available. Church services that day will be at 9:45 a.m. and Sunday school is at 11 a.m.

Ss. Peter and Paul Rosary Society of Hawk Run will sponsor a spaghetti dinner Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church social center on 803 Empire Road in Hawk Run.

The meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, rolls and homemade desserts. Prices are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger. Dine in or takeouts are available. Meals will be delivered to shut-ins within a 10-mile radius of Hawk Run.

Tickets can be purchased from any society member or at the door. There will also be a Chinese auction and a 50/50 drawing. Proceeds benefit Ss. Peter & Paul Church.

Museum open

The Coalport Area Coal Museum, located in the Coalport community building at 916 Forest St., is open every Sunday from 1-4 p.m.

The museum houses more than 350 artifacts in 17 displays, featuring the original tools, equipment, texts, photos, scale-model and full-size replicas of the coal mining heritage.

In addition, a comprehensive collection of genealogical materials from the local Glendale Valley area (including all cemetery listings and more than 4,600 indexed obituaries) is in the library/reference room.

Winging Weekends

Winging Weekends returns to Irvona Fire Co. Sunday from 2-7 p.m.

There are multiple wing flavors including plain, ranch, hot, Cajun, butter and garlic and two homemade flavors, including the 27 sauce, which is sweet and tangy, and mom sauce, which is a sweet barbecue.

A dozen large wings is $6. There are also homemade fries and hamburgers including the Big Easy, which is a quarter-pound hamburger on a toasted bun with cheese, 27 sauce, onions and fries.
