HYDE - As the fourth quarter of Friday night's football game between Clearfield and St. Marys began, a Bison player yelled from the sidelines, "You got 12 more minutes seniors, let's do it." Clearfield, which already led 29-0 at that point, walked off the field at the Bison Sports Complex with a 29-6 win, sending its 17 seniors off with a memento that will last a lifetime. With the win, the Bisons clinched the Mountain Athletic Conference Nittany Division title, and the seniors came away with the memory of a dominating win in their last performance on their home field.
"It was very emotional for the kids because it was Senior Night," Clearfield head coach Tim Janocko said. "And how many times do you get a chance to win a championship on your Senior Night? That says it all right there."
Clearfield came out firing on its first play from scrimmage, running a trick play that caught St. Marys totally off guard. Bison quarterback Jarrin Campman lateraled to receiver Brandon Sass, who chucked the ball downfield to a wide-open Trey Campman for a 42-yard gain to the Dutch 25.
"We've been working on it all year, waiting for the right opportunity to run it, and I thought tonight was as good as any," Janocko said. "The kids made a nice play. Brandon made a nice pass, and Trey got open and caught the ball."
Three straight Isiah Morgan runs gave the Bisons a first-and-goal at the 9-yard line, and Jarrin Campman scored from two yards out four plays later.
The Bison offense got the ball back after the Dutch lost six yards on three offensive plays and were forced to punt from their own 28.
After Jarrin Campman's 16-yard punt return, the Bisons set up shop in St. Marys territory at the 47.
Clearfield drove 47 yards in 15 plays, taking the last six minutes off the first-quarter clock and 1:50 off the second before Jarrin Campman scored on a 4-yard run right up the middle.
The Bisons ran the ball 14 times in the drive behind an unbalanced line that was used to counter St. Marys putting nine guys in the box. The offensive line of Nick Redden, Cruise Kerr, Andre Buck, Bradon Dixon, Zach Stephens and Justin Barbieri established itself early in the game as Clearfield ran 19 plays in the first quarter to just three for St. Marys.
"I thought it (the unbalanced line) gave us a different look, and it gave us a chance to control the ball and get some big first downs," Janocko said.
The teams traded three-and-outs after the second Campman score before St. Marys took over on its own 17-yard line with less than six minutes left in the half.
On the first play of the series, Dutch quarterback Greg Simchick tried to loft a pass over the Bison line, but Redden deflected the pass, knocking the ball high into the air and then picking it off. He returned it all the way to the 3-yard line to give the Clearfield offense the ball on the doorstep.
"Nick intercepting that ball was a big play," Janocko said.
Campman scored his third touchdown of the game three plays later, and Parker Herrington added his third PAT to give the Bisons a 21-0 lead at the half.
Until the final St. Marys possession of the half, the Bison defense limited the Flying Dutch to 0 yards on 12 plays. St. Marys was dropped for losses on four of those plays and only had one first down up to that point, and that was on a penalty.
"I thought we pretty much handled them in the first half," Janocko said. "I thought we played well defensively. That was the key, because they're capable of putting some points on the board. And our special teams played well, too. Those were two things we needed to work on, and I thought we did well."
The Dutch did hit runs of 21 and 22 yards on the last two plays before halftime with the Bisons in a prevent defense.
St. Marys got the ball first to start the second half and picked up a quick first down before the Bisons forced it to punt. Clearfield moved the ball to midfield before the Dutch defense stiffened and the Bisons had to punt back to the visitors.
Herrington's punt landed inside the 15-yard line and bounced toward the Dutch goal line. The ball kept rolling until Trey Campman downed it inside the 1. Herrington averaged nearly 40 yards per kick on four punts.
"Parker just kicked the ball real well tonight. He's been fantastic for us. That punt was huge. And Trey made a big play by letting it roll and stopping it on the 1-inch line."
On the next play, a herd of Bisons tackled Dutch running back Eric Hoy in the end zone, giving Clearfield a safety and a 23-0 lead with 5:30 left in the third quarter.
Clearfield then got the ball back on a free kick after the safety, starting its next drive at the Dutch 38-yard line.
The Bisons served St. Marys a heaping helping of Morgan on the series. The bruising Bison back carried the ball six times on the seven-play drive that culminated with his 3-yard score with 1:38 left in the quarter.
"I thought as the game went on our offensive line started to take the game over, and Isiah started taking over running the ball," Janocko said. "He had some big runs. And Jarrin did his thing."
Morgan ran 22 times for 72 yards, while Campman carried 20 times for 68 yards.
St. Marys scored a late fourth-quarter touchdown when Simchick hit Michael Feldbauer for a 10-yard score with 2:19 left to play. Derek Danver blocked the extra point then recovered St. Marys' attempt at an onside kick.
The Dutch score was set up by a 64-yard pass play where Simchick hit Feldbauer, who advanced the ball to the Clearfield 25, then lateraled back to James Swanson, who got the ball to the Bison 11 before being dragged down.
The Bisons improved to 8-2, while the Dutch fell to 6-4.
The teams will meet again next week in the District 9 Class AAA title game at a site and time to be determined.
"Next week is a whole new ball game," Janocko said. "We'll take a day and celebrate this win, because we won a MAC championship, and that's huge. I'm real happy for these kids and the program. We beat some good teams to win that championship. We played a pretty stiff schedule."
NOTES: Clearfield ran 59 plays to St. Marys' 37. The Bisons gained 166 yards on the ground and had 230 total. St. Marys had 169 yards of offense with 75 coming on the late touchdown drive ...
