Bisons stunned by Bearcats

HUNTINGDON - Just about anything that could go wrong did go wrong Friday night for the Clearfield football team.
The Bisons committed three turnovers, were flagged for 72 yards in penalties and made crucial mistakes in every facet of the game on their way to a 33-7 loss to Huntingdon at War Vets Field.
"We had a rough night," Clearfield head coach Tim Janocko said. "We didn't do much right in any facet. We made too many mistakes, and just didn't do anything well. But these are high school kids, and you're going to have these nights. It's hard to be perfect every night."
Clearfield ran into trouble right from the start as it went for it on a fourth down play from its own 42-yard line on the first drive of the game and was stuffed for no gain. That set Huntingdon up in Bison territory, and the Bearcat offense played there the entire first quarter.
Huntingdon ran all eight of its plays over two first-quarter possessions in Clearfield territory, but came away empty-handed both times when quarterback Nathan Betts tossed a pair of picks. Trey Campman picked off the first one at the Bison 1-yard line, while Jarrin Campman got the second interception at the Clearfield 18.
After the second interception, Clearfield looked to get its offense untracked, moving from the 18 to the Huntingdon 37-yard line on a drive that started in the first quarter and moved into the second. But the Bisons lost a fumble on the next play and Huntingdon took full advantage. The Bearcats went 62 yards in six plays with tailback Scott Minor racing down the sidelines for the final 48 to give Huntingdon a 7-0 lead after the PAT at 7:21.
"Turnovers killed us," Janocko said. "Initially, they did a couple things on defense that we had to address. They were submarining our offensive linemen, but after we figured it out, our kids started to move the ball. But then we had the fumble. Turnovers really killed us. We were going in and could have been up 7-0 there."
It didn't get any better for the Bisons as they went three-and-out on the next possession and Huntingdon took over on the Clearfield 49-yard line. The Bearcats started drives in Clearfield territory three times in the first half.
This time, Huntingdon cashed in on the good field position, going 49 yards in five plays. Betts scored from the 1 on a quarterback sneak and Huntingdon led 14-0 with 2:54 left before the half.
After Trey Campman returned the ensuing kickoff to the Bison 33-yard line, Clearfield went into a hurry-up offense and easily moved the length of the field. Jarrin Campman completed four of his first five passes on the possession for 46 yards. But his fifth attempt was intercepted by Bearcat defensive back Michael Sellers, who made a good break on the ball and stepped in front of the intended receiver at the 9-yard line.
Sellers didn't stop there, taking the ball down the sideline and then scooting across the field to avoid would-be Clearfield tacklers, going 91 yards to paydirt to give Huntingdon a stunning 21-0 lead at the half.
"I really preached on making a commitment to the ball," Huntingdon head coach Jim Zauzig said. "Our d-backs were allowing plays to be made underneath. We wanted them to make a break on the ball, and if they fail, so what. He made a break. I didn't think he was going to have legs to get to the end zone, but the Clearfield kid had to run just as far."
Needing some momentum to start the second half, the Clearfield defense came up big, stopping Huntingdon on its initial possession and forcing a Bearcat punt.
The offense followed suit, going 68 yards in eight plays and scoring on a 6-yard touchdown run from Jarrin Campman. Parker Herrington added the extra point and Clearfield had new life, trailing 21-7 with 8:03 left in the third quarter.
The big play in the drive was a 32-yard reception by Trey Campman, who caught seven passes for 77 yards on the night.
Things looked even better for the Bisons when they again stopped the Bearcat offense in three plays to force another punt. And when it took over at the Huntingdon 44-yard line, Clearfield seemed poised to make a game of it.
But two consecutive plays that went for negative yardage and an incomplete third down pass took the wind out of the Bisons' sails.
"That series hurt us," Janocko said. "We needed to make a couple plays there, and we didn't."
"That third quarter got a little sticky," Zauzig said. "They definitely flexed their muscles and came at us, and we were sort of playing to not lose, instead of playing to win. But we got out of that third quarter still up two touchdowns, and I think we saw the light at the end of the tunnel and played to win."
The Clearfield defense came up with its third consecutive three-and-out of the second half to force another Huntingdon punt, but Bearcat punter Andrew Cerett made that a positive by booming a 59-yarder all the way to the Bison 5-yard line.
On the very next play, Jarrin Campman was called for intentional grounding in the end zone, giving Huntingdon a safety and a 23-7 lead.
The Bison bench was then penalized for arguing the call, and Clearfield ended up having to free-kick from its own 10-yard line after all the penalties were assessed.
"That was a huge punt," Zauzig said. "That was another part of the game plan ... giving them a long field. And we have who I feel is the best punter in the league. That was a very big dagger. The field position, the safety, the penalties ... everything changed."
Huntingdon got a 27-yard field goal on its next possession and added a 15-yard Betts touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to set the final.
Clearfield tailback Isiah Morgan, who came into the game with 1,289 yards, was held to 54 yards on 12 carries and only ran the ball once in the second half until the final drive when all but the final score had been decided, as the Bisons were running four- and five-wide receiver sets.
"We had to try to get back in the game," Janocko said. "I thought we were on our way and then we had a couple things go against us."
Jarrin Campman threw for 130 yards and rushed for 78. Campman tossed two interceptions on the night.
Minor led the Bearcats with 116 yards on 24 carries, but he only managed 25 on 12 second-half totes.
Clearfield fell to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in the Mountain Athletic Conference Nittany Division. Huntingdon improved to 6-3 overall.
The Bisons play host to St. Marys Friday in the regular-season finale.
"We'll find out what kind of team we have now," Janocko said. "We have to bounce back. We can still win this league if we beat St. Marys."
