HYDE - Trailing 14-0 midway through the first quarter to a visiting Central squad that came into Friday night's game undefeated, the Clearfield football team needed a spark. What it got was a raging inferno in the form of senior Isiah Morgan.
The Bison tailback bruised and battered his way to 304 yards on 32 punishing carries, scoring on touchdown runs of 4, 4, 56, 7 and 19 yards.
"He just keeps getting better," Clearfield head coach Tim Janocko said. "He's tough to bring down, especially when you keep pounding and pounding him."
The Bisons amassed 452 yards on the ground as the offensive line had its way with the Central defense.
"I have to give a lot of credit to our offensive line of Nick (Redden), Cruise (Kerr), Andre (Buck), Brady (Dixon) and Zach (Stephens), as well as Justin (Barbieri), who spells the starters," Janocko said. "Those six have been a big reason for our offensive success."
"We knew Clearfield would be a handful up front," Central head coach A.J. Hoenstine said. "They have some monsters on the line."
Clearfield fell behind, 7-0, as it allowed the Scarlet Dragons to drive the ball 94 yards on eight plays on the game's first offensive possession. Quarterback Derek Forshey, who went the final 12 yards for a score, had a big 14-yard scramble on a third down that kept the drive alive and hooked up with receiver Jordon Saylor on a 20-yard strike that set up the score.
"We got out of position on defense in that first series," Janocko said. "We didn't contain the quarterback, and he made some plays."
The Scarlet Dragons added to their lead at 5:17 of the first quarter on a Lucas Runk 1-yard run. That score was set up by a 42-yard Drew Ebersole interception return on the previous play.
But the Bisons responded with an 11-play, 67-yard drive that featured all running plays. Morgan accounted for 37 yards on the series with Jarrin Campman carrying for the other 30. Campman finished off the drive with a 10-yard run, and Parker Herrington booted the PAT to get Clearfield back in the game, 14-7.
That drive was a sign of things to come as the Bisons scored 42 unanswered points that turned early apprehension into another blowout win.
"When you get down, 14-0, to a 7-and-0 team, you're on your heels," Janocko said. "We really haven't faced much adversity since the first week, so we needed something like that for this team to grow up. We kept our poise and didn't panic. We found out what kind of team we have."
After Campman's score, Central moved the ball from its 46-yard line to the Bison 27 before Clearfield forced a turnover on downs. The Bisons then went 63 yards in eight plays with Morgan going the final four yards, tying the game at 14-14 after the PAT.
On the ensuing kickoff, Campman and Tyler Wilson hit Dragon return man Runk high and low, forcing a fumble that kicker Herrington recovered. Just six plays later, the Bisons hit paydirt again.
"That was a big play," Janocko said of the fumble recovery. "That gave us a short field."
Herrington not only recovered the fumble, but the Bison placekicker also was 7-for-7 on extra points and made a touchdown-saving tackle on an earlier kickoff return.
"He made two big plays for us tonight," Janocko said. "He's an athlete."
Campman finished off the 33-yard drive set up by the turnover with an 8-yard run as the Bisons went to the break with a 21-14 advantage. The Bison quarterback ran the ball 14 times for 106 yards.
Clearfield quickly upped its lead to 28-14 when Morgan's second, 4-yard touchdown run capped a 71-yard drive on the first possession of the third quarter.
After the Bisons forced Central to go three-and-out on its next series, it took just one play for the Bisons to find the end zone again.
Morgan burst through a gaping hole in the line, ran over a defender or two and galloped for a 56-yard touchdown that put the Bisons in front, 35-14, with 5:43 to go in the third quarter.
"He's the best running back we've seen so far," Hoenstine said. "We needed to come out and hit him and try to slow him down, but we didn't do that. He's tough to stop."
Central tried to shift the momentum on its next drive, faking a punt on fourth-and-10 from its own 41-yard line. But Andre Buck was having none of the Scarlet Dragons' shenanigans, pulling Runk down for an 11-yard loss and giving his offense its best field position of the night at the Central 30.
Three Morgan runs later, Clearfield led 42-14.
The Scarlet Dragons used the "Wildcat" formation a little in the next series, as Runk took the direct snap and fired a 26-yard pass to Saylor, putting them in business at the Bison 26-yard line.
But Josh Rippey knifed through the line three plays later, throwing Forcey for an 11-yard loss and forcing a Central punt.
"Josh Rippey played really well tonight," Janocko said. "He made some huge plays. He and Andre were all over the field. All our linebackers played very well."
Morgan put an exclamation point on his big night, scoring his fifth touchdown from 19 yards out, putting him over 300 for the night and giving the Bisons a 49-14 lead.
Runk finalized the scoring with a 60-yard scamper against the Bison jayvee defense. Clearfield held the talented sophomore tailback in check until that final run. Runk ended the night with 88 yards on 14 carries, but had just 28 yards on 13 runs against the Clearfield starters.
"We matched Jarrin up on him, and he pretty much took him out of the game," Janocko said.
"They put Campman on him as a spy, but we thought we could do some other things," Hoenstine said. "It was tough running inside. Their size up front made it difficult.
"I told our kids this would be a nice atmosphere and a good test. We came out fired up, and I thought we had a good game plan. But give Clearfield credit, they didn't get down on themselves when we went up 14-0. They ran the ball and we just couldn't stop them."
Clearfield improved to 7-1 with the win. The Bisons travel to Huntingdon on Friday.
