HYDE - The Clearfield volleyball team looked like it might have been in for a three-set match on Tuesday evening against Brockway after easily disposing of the Lady Rovers in the first set. The Lady Bisons came out flat in the second set, however, as Brockway pulled even.
As it turns out, the teams were even through four sets, alternating wins, and a deciding set was needed.
Clearfield fell behind in the third and fourth sets early, but jumped on Brockway early in the fifth and was able to pull away at the end to win the match.
The Lady Bisons won 25-16, 13-25, 26-24, 17-25 and 15-11.
"They always play tough," said Clearfield coach Bob Peters of Brockway, "because we took them into five sets here last year. We played like a house on fire in the first set. If we would have played that way all night, then we wouldn't have been here nearly as long."
After taking care of Clearfield in the second set, the Lady Rovers appeared to be on a roll in the third set, only to see the Lady Bisons come scrapping back into the thick of things.
Clearfield's serving was strong in the opening set, but it struggled in the second and third sets until Ashlie Gearhart rallied the Lady Bisons.
Gearhart, whose jump serve led Clearfield's charge in the first, made her second run to bring the Lady Bisons from a four-point deficit to a 21-all tie.
Kelsey Glace had a kill during the run, while Jennie Knepp placed one of her many shots where no Brockway player was.
"She was placing the ball really well," Peters said of Knepp, "and she hit the open spot all the time. Her play and Ashlie's serving were really key tonight.
"I was really pleased the way we came back in the third game. We were down six or seven points, and we were able to come back and win it."
Like the second set, though, Clearfield was unable to maintain the momentum.
Brockway showed it, too, could go on service runs, as runs of four and five spearheaded the Lady Rovers to the win.
Samantha Broad gave the Lady Bisons the early advantage with help from Monika Parks, who had a kill during the run.
"The two games before that we came out and got down early," said Peters, "and then we came out and got the early lead in the fifth set. I thought, ‘that's a good thing,' and it worked out for us."
Despite the early deficit, Brockway battled back and tied things up.
Clearfield gained a big boost when Glace recorded four service points to break a 9-all tie, and the Lady Rovers were unable to recover.
Brockway had two opportunities to come back in the set, but both of the serve attempts ended up in the net, giving Broad the serve with the Lady Bisons leading 14-11.
Broad recorded the service point and Clearfield picked up its fifth win of the season when Gearhart killed the ball between a pair of Lady Rover players.
With Clearfield clinging to an 18-14 lead in the first, Gearhart's jump serve proved to be too much for Brockway to handle.
Gearhart had four straight service points to give her team some breathing room, as the Lady Bisons went on for the nine-point win.
"She was hitting her jump serves pretty well tonight," Peters said. "She had a pretty good run there. She's been doing it in practices and, again, she did really well with it tonight. I was happy she did well tonight because usually she's hitting maybe 50 percent of them."
Clearfield improved to 5-8 on the season and will look to avenge a loss to DuBois at home on Thursday.
The Lady Bisons dropped the jayvee game in straight sets (25-15, 25-13) to fall to 1-13 on the season.
