Clearfield girls soccer defeated by visiting State College
Wednesday, October 15, 2008
By Rich Murawski Assistant Sports Editor
HYDE - The State College girls soccer team brought nearly 40 girls (including 11 seniors and 10 juniors) to the Bison Sports Complex on Tuesday, and came away with an impressive 6-1 victory over the host Lady Bisons.

"They're a big time quad-A school, and we're a smaller AAA for girls soccer," Clearfield head coach Jen Wright said. "They have the numbers out. They're talented and they play all year round.

"I think we played well, but I also think a couple of their goals were due to us miscommunicating and not going through the ball hard. A few of their goals were earned as well."

The Lady Little Lions pressured the Clearfield net from the outset, peppering Lady Bison keeper Brandie Centi with shot after shot, getting plenty of early scoring chances on both their regular offense as well as a plethora of corner kicks.

State College had seven corners in the first 20 minutes alone and that relentless pressure on the Clearfield goal led to a 2-0 lead just 7:07 into the contest.

Amber Agostinelli headed the ball into the net for the first State College goal. Chrissy Cooper got the assist on the score that started off with Carley Nicholson's corner kick.

Cooper got the second Lady Little Lion goal when she one-timed a shot out of the air and past Centi. Katelyn Gill served the ball into the box from about 30 yards out.

Clearfield kept State College at bay for most of the rest of the half, albeit for one instance when a defensive breakdown led to an Emily Peters goal at 24:50.

Peters was left standing by herself at the 6-yard line and booted the ball into an open net after receiving a pass from Nicholson, who had taken the ball deep into the right wing area and then toward the near post.

Centi had to stay on the near post to guard against a Nicholson shot, and didn't have time to get back to block the Peters shot. Centi did make several brilliant saves in the first half, including a pair of diving stops and a third where she knocked a ball over the crossbar. She came up with 11 saves on the day.

"She made some fabulous saves that kept us in the game," Wright said of Centi.

State College added to its lead early in the second half, scoring a pair of goals 31 seconds apart that gave it a 5-0 advantage with over 30 minutes left to play.

Nicholson found the back of the net off a Kelsey Gill pass, and Gill headed in a ball off a Peters cross.

Lady Lion Kelsey Graham made it a 6-0 game at 66:14.

But the Lady Bisons never relented, and their hard work finally paid off at 70:02 when Matalica Jarvis scored her first varsity goal. Julia Ammerman assisted on the score.

Ammerman took the ball from the left wing and toward the near post before firing a shot at the State College keeper. The goalie made the first stop, but couldn't control the rebound. Jarvis was there to bang the ball to the back of net and get Clearfield on the board.

"Matalica was at the right place at the right time," Wright said. "She and Julia got in behind the defense. Julia took a shot and the keeper made a save, and Jarvis was there to put it home.

"That was great. I'm very excited for Matalica. To score your first varsity goal against State College ... what a great goal."

Clearfield appeared to score moments later when Brooke Mohney, who was standing in the box on a Lady Bison corner kick, got the ball by the keeper. But the officials ruled it didn't cross the line.

Despite the loss, Wright was pleased with the effort of many of her players.

"Katlyn Reddinger had another phenomenal game," Wright said. "She was our driving force. She did not stop at all. When she was exhausted, she asked for a sub, and when she was ready, she went right back in.

"Brooke Mohney played well possessing the ball for us, as well as Abby (Fishbone) and Nichole (Powers). Kristen Butler played well on the outside and up top. Janell (Zalno) played well. (Emily) Barger and (Candice) Morgan had good games on defense, as did Lisa (Bumbarger). I really think everyone played well. We didn't stop. We had some opportunities throughout the game, but we didn't capitalize on them.

Clearfield fell to 6-10 with the loss. The Lady Bisons play host to Hollidaysburg on Monday.
