Lady Bisons roll on Senior Day
Thursday, October 02, 2008
By Rich Murawski Assistant Sports Editor
HYDE - B.J. Bowman notched a hat trick and Brooke Mohney scored two goals and added two assists to lead the Clearfield girls soccer team to a 6-0 win over visiting Punxsutawney as the Lady Bisons celebrated Senior Recognition Day Wednesday at the Bison Sports Complex.

Clearfield head coach Jen Wright sent the eight seniors on the field to the start the game and got a strong effort from the group, as the Lady Bisons battled Punxsutawney to a scoreless tie over the first 10 minutes of play. The seniors also got to play together for the final ten minutes of the second half and gave the home crowd a few thrills as they nearly scored on several occasions.

"It was nice to get all the seniors on the field at the same time in a varsity game," Wright said. "At first, it was a little dreary with the weather and the rain coming down, but I was hoping it would clear up for the seniors' sake so they could have a nice recognition, and it did. They all gave a great effort and played with a lot of heart and intensity."

Already up 6-0, the Lady Bisons pressured the Punxsutawney defense hoping to get one or more of the seniors a goal on their special day. Shaina Turner made a couple nice runs down the left wing and got a quality shot off, while Shelby Shugarts just missed putting one in at the front of the net. Abby Fishbone, the only regular senior starter, also had a pair of quality shots during the onslaught.

"They kept pushing and wanting to get a goal," Wright said. "It was nice to see (sweeper) Lisa (Bumbarger) getting the ball up top as much as possible to try to get a senior or two a goal, and Brooke was dishing off the ball instead of looking for the shot. It was just nice to see the girls pushing for that.

"Turner did an excellent job on the outside mid along with Kaitlin Adamson. Alyssa Bell, Melanie Riglin and Brittney Mayhew played well on defense. And up top, Mayhew, Brianna English and Shelby did a nice job."

Clearfield got on the board in the 17th minute as Mohney corralled a loose ball in the box off an errant Lady Chuck pass and drilled it past Punxsutawney keeper Timi Shiock to give Clearfield the lead.

A little over a minute later, Mohney sent a touch pass to Bowman who was crashing the net from the right wing. Bowman got the ball to her right foot and blasted it by Shiock to give Clearfield a 2-0 lead and control of the game.

"They came out strong, and that was nice to see especially after the rough week we had against Hollidaysburg and State College," Wright said of her team. "I think overall the girls' intensity and passing was great. They were very offensive minded. Our defenders got involved in the play.

"Lisa did a great job in the back distributing the ball. Our defenders (Emily Barger, Candice Morgan and Janell Zalno) did a great job of setting the ball and swinging around and switching our point of attack. Our outside mids (Kristen Butler, Julia Ammerman and Katlyn Reddinger) got involved in the play. They got some crossed off and got the ball inside the box for our forwards to finish."

Clearfield added to its lead at 38:12 when sophomore Hannah Reifer got loose in the box and sent a hard shot toward the goal. Shiock made the initial save, but couldn't get a handle on the ball as it trickled to her right where Ammerman was there to put the ball in the net and give the Lady Bisons a three-goal cushion.

"We tell players to make the most of their playing time no matter how many minutes they get in the game and Hannah did that," Wright said. "She took a great shot, and the keeper couldn't control it. Ammerman was in the right spot at the right time and put it away."

Ammerman was on the other end of a rebound goal midway through the second half as she sent a ball from the left wing toward the Lady Chuck goal. Shiock made a diving save, knocking the ball away. But Bowman got to it before a Punxsy defender could clear it and found the back of the net at 57:27.

"She muscles her way through," Wright said of Bowman. "She's determined. She wants to get the ball. Sometimes she gets frustrated with herself when she misses an opportunity or can't get the ball to the net. But she will take shots when she gets the chance. That's what we want from our forwards."

Mohney got her second goal of the contest at 61:03 when she took advantage of another Lady Chuck turnover inside their own box and put the finishing touch on it.

She then added her second assist less than five minutes later, sending a short cross to Bowman, who buried the ball in the Punxsy net to earn the hat trick and finalize the scoring.

"Brooke was composed with the ball and did a good job finding the open man," Wright said. "She helped control the tempo of the game for us. And she did a great job taking shots and finishing when she had scoring opportunities."

Clearfield improved to 5-7 with the win. The Lady Bisons travel to St. Marys on Tuesday.
