Week 5 High School Football Previews:
Thursday, September 25, 2008
Clearfield, Curwensville, Purchase Line and Mo Valley hope to keep on winning
As we enter Week 5, four local teams find  themselves ranked honorable mention in the latest rankings issued by the Harrisburg Patriot-News, and all four will look to keep on their winning ways.

Fresh off of downing state-ranked Tyrone, Clearfield will take to the road this week to face Bellefonte, while Curwensville also travels to face Brockway.

Purchase Line, which leads the point standings in District 6 Class A, meets up with rival Northern Cambria, and Moshannon Valley will also look to run its record to 5-0 when it hosts Tussey Mountain.

Glendale will look for its second win of the season and welcomes winless Williamsburg to Dr. Roy F. Baker Field, while Philipsburg-Osceola will also look for win No. 2 when it hosts Bellefonte in a battle for the Luther Trophy.

West Branch will travel to face Everett in search of its first win.

Here's a closer look at each game:

Clearfield (3-1)

at Lewistown (0-4)

LEWISTOWN - Bisons beware - coming off one of the biggest regular-season wins in program history, a 35-34 win over Tyrone, Clearfield will have to avoid a letdown against a Lewistown team that can't be overlooked, despite the discrepancy in the two squads' records.

"Our kids have been around long enough to know that every week in this league you've got to be ready to play because anyone in this league can beat you," Clearfield head coach Tim Janocko said.

"We just need to focus on continuously getting better and realizing it was one game (against Tyrone), and there's a whole season left. We're not where we want to be yet. We haven't realized any of our goals, so we need to focus on Lewistown."

The Panthers are led by senior quarterback Connor Muir, who is a threat both through the air and on the ground, and is the focal point of the Lewistown offense.

"It's pretty much centered around the quarterback," Janocko said. "He throws the ball pretty well, and he's had some long runs. We pretty much have to focus on him and their passing attack."

The two schools last met in 2006, when Clearfield shutout Lewistown 31-0.

The Panthers fell to Penns Valley 40-13 last week.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Curwensville (3-1)

at Brockway (2-2)

BROCKWAY - The Tide are looking to rebound after a heartbreaking loss in double overtime last week, while the Rovers are coming off a 51-20 win over Otto-Eldred.

Brockway, which has a heavily pass-oriented game, is led by sophomore quarterback Derek Buganza. Buganza is 81-of-140 on the season with 1,040 yards and seven touchdowns.

Buganza's favorite targets are the duo of Mike Vervoort and Ben Kuhar, who both have caught two touchdown passes each. Vervoort has 26 receptions for 247 yards, while Kuhar has seven receptions for 225 yards on the season.

"We have to have great pass coverage," said Curwensville head coach Andy Evanko. "We need to make sure we cover their pass routes and we have to put pressure on the quarterback."

The Rovers average 23.3 points per game, but allow 34. The Brockway defense seems to have trouble stopping the run, allowing an average 303.8 yards so far this year.

"They have really great athletes there," Evanko said. "It's hard to understand how they have given up so many yards there. But I think our kids are ready to go (after the loss last week). They are resilient. We have had a pretty good week of practice. I think we are pretty much ready to focus on the task at hand."

Brockway has defeated Otto-Eldred and Smethport (22-21). The Rovers have lost to Coudersport (55-20) and Cameron County (40-0).

"That's the one thing about the Allegheny Mountain League," said Evanko. "You have to be ready each week because there are a lot of good teams, and you never know what can happen."

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Purchase Line (4-0)

at Northern Cambria (2-2)

NORTHERN CAMBRIA - Overcoming yet another hurdle in Week 4 by dropping Homer-Center 29-20, Purchase Line heads to Northern Cambria still undefeated.

The Colts will try to play the spoiler with a dangerous rushing attack led by running backs Andy Paronish and Isaac Lieb. Paronish has 611 yards (152.8 per game) and seven touchdowns. He's also the defensive leader with 50 tackles.

"Paronish and Lieb are two very good running backs," Purchase Line head coach Dave Small said.

"Paronish is very fast and likes to cut back against the seams, and when he gets to the open field he's elusive and tough to bring down. We've got to work on keeping him pinned inside and not letting him get outside of us."

Purchase Line is prepared to go outside of its preferred game plan - pounding the ball on the ground - and go to the air a little bit if it faces the seven- and eight-man defensive fronts it expects.

"I'm sure they're going to do a lot of stunting and blitzing with their backers. We may have to throw the ball more than we want to, but we're comfortable with doing that ... and hopefully opening some things up for our running game later," Small said.

With the coaching staff circling Game 5 as a critical, potentially season-changing game, the Red Dragons approach this game knowing that what happens against Northern Cambria could swing momentum for the second half of the season.

"Game five is very pivotal," Small said. "We're reaching the halfway point of the season, and it's now where you want to be hitting stride and getting better each week.

"We try to keep things in the proper perspective. Yeah, we've won four games, but you can very easily slip. We have had success but don't want to rest on our laurels."

Purchase Line defeated the Colts 14-8 in last year's Week 1 meeting. Northern Cambria fell to Blairsville 42-28 last week.

Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.

Tussey Mountain (1-3)

at Moshannon Valley (4-0)

AMESVILLE - Last week's win qualified Moshannon Valley for the postseason for the second year in a row, but the Black Knights don't plan on stopping there.

Mo Valley hopes to get to 5-0 for the first time since 2004, but the Titans of Tussey Mountain are standing in its way.

Tussey Mountain has been led on both sides of the ball by Levi Neuder. Neuder has the big-game potential, as evidenced by his 161 yards against Claysburg-Kimmel and 118 yards versus Everett.

Neuder is also a stalwart on defense, as he's made 46 tackles to his credit.

"He's a stud," said Mo Valley head coach Murray Fetzer of Neuder. "We've got to know where he is at all times.

"This will be one of the toughest tests for our (offensive) line so far. Their defensive linemen come up the field hard and they're strong. They have a nice line, and very little separates this team from being 3-1 or 1-3."

Tussey Mountain has had some success through the air as well with quarterback Logan Melius completing 17 passes for 191 yards.

Melius main targets have been Dane Diehl (5 catches, 69 yards) and Dave McMurtrie (6-48).

"We got hurt on the pass last week, so we need to tighten our coverage and that's something we've worked on this week," Fetzer said. "They flood a lot of zones when they pass and they put a lot of pressure on your backs. We know that's coming. We need to prepare and hopefully execute."

The two teams haven't met since 1998 when the Knights came away with a 28-12 win. The Titans haven't picked up a victory over Mo Valley since 1994.

The Knights lead the all-time series 17-4.

"It's one of those things were the kids don't know Tussey, and we have to motivate them off of playing a tough game," said Fetzer. "They want to be an undefeated team. ... They're a 3-1 team in our eyes, and we've been stressing they're aggressive and they're strong."

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

Bellefonte (2-2)

at Philipsburg-Osceola (1-3)

PHILIPSBURG - The battle for the Luther Trophy gets underway on Friday evening when the Mounties host the Raiders for the 90th meeting between the two teams.

Bellefonte is 2-2 on the season, losing its last two games by a total of 76-7. The Raiders were hammered in Week 4 by Hollidaysburg, 53-7.

Bellefonte scored its lone touchdown last week on a 76-yard touchdown pass from Kode Plank to Torin Miller.

Plank finished the game with 210 yards passing and three interceptions. He has thrown for 491 yards in four games with five touchdowns.

The Mounties are also coming off a loss, falling to Central, 48-28. P-O lost leading tackler and starting quarterback Steve Rusnak, but hope he may be able to play, at least on defense.

The key for P-O will be buckling down on defense and not allowing the big play.

"This week we are focusing on tackling," said P-O head coach Jeff Vroman. "We can't continue to give up long runs on second-and-long and third-and-long. Several times this year we have done a nice job on first down only to give up big plays in situations that we know the opponent needs large gains. Many of these plays have happened due to poor tackling and lack of aggressiveness.

"Losing Steve last week was critical. He is our leading tackler and many of those plays are ones he can make. We will see how things play out and if Steve is able to go."

The Mounties defeated Bellefonte last season, 13-10. The Raiders lead the overall series, 47-40-2.

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Memorial Field.

West Branch (0-4)

at Everett (3-1)

EVERETT - A week after struggling against powerhouse Bellwood-Antis, the Warriors have to stay focused and get in gear as they travel to Everett in a Warriors versus Warriors matchup.

"The big thing is we put last week behind us," West Branch head coach Rob Lazauskas said, "and that's what we had to do.

"It was one of those nights where pretty much nothing went right, but we're getting into a stretch where we've got five ball games left and five games we feel we can compete in. We just need to keep coaching them up, take it week by week and see where we're at."

This time around West Branch will have to be ready for an offense that gives a variety of looks, from the wing-t to the spread. Regardless of the offensive set, the leader will be senior quarterback Brad Swindell, a dual-threat who has passed for 581 yards and six touchdowns along with seven interceptions.

"We just have to be aware of where they're lining up," Lazauskas said.

"Their quarterback is definitely capable. He throws the ball real well and is also a threat running the football. He's someone that we definitely have to contain."

Defensively Everett will run out a strong front seven that will look to get pressure on the quarterback and disrupt West Branch's offense. Linebacker Anthony Lemin leads the team with 42 tackles while defensive end Damiane Barger has already racked up five sacks.

"They come hard up front, and I think that's the key to what they try to do defensively," Lazauskas said They really try to get to you with the front. We have to do a better job of sustaining our blocks, and I think the kids are up to it. We didn't really do a bad job up front with Bellwood, I think Bellwood was just stronger physically. We expect to see a lot of the same with Everett.

"There are a lot of instances where we were in position to make plays, and we just didn't do it. The kids realize that we're close to being a very good football team. I hate to keep saying it over and over again, but we are that close. The kids need to have confidence in themselves and trust in each other. The kids are right there, they just need to make plays."

Everett came out on top of a tight game last year, defeating West Branch 16-14 in the season-opener.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Williamsburg (0-4)

at Glendale (1-3)

FLINTON - After playing well in a loss to rival Moshannon Valley, Glendale will look to put forth the same effort this week against Williamsburg.

The Vikings came within inches of recovering an onside kick against the Black Knights last week, but can't afford an emotional letdown against a winless Blue Pirate team.

Williamsburg has been shut out in consecutive games, and injuries, particularly at quarterback, have slowed down the Blue Pirates' offense.

Quarterbacks Joe Fay and Trent Lee were injured in last week's 27-0 loss at Northern Bedford, and the Williamsburg offense gained just 23 yards in the contest.

The Blue Pirates had minus-6 yards on the ground.

While the Pirates have struggled, the Viking offense has thrived in the last two games.

Sophomore Tyler Jenny has gained 133 yards on the ground in the last two games after finishing with negative yardage through the first two contests of the season.

Jenny thrived in the shotgun last week, and that opened some things up for fullback Vance Kimberly as well.

Glendale coach Rick Kozak was unavailable for comment.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
