Clearfield ends Tyrone's 35-game regular season win streak

HYDE - It wasn't Muhammad Ali versus Joe Frazier, but Friday night's gridiron slugfest between a pair of central Pennsylvania's most successful programs had that heavyweight prizefighter feel. After both teams took the best shots the other had to offer, it was Clearfield that threw the knockout punch, dropping District 6 Class AA powerhouse Tyrone, 35-34, at a jam-packed Bison Sports Complex. The Clearfield win snapped Tyrone's 35-game regular season winning streak.
"It was like two heavyweight fighters going at each other," Clearfield head coach Tim Janocko said. "And at the end, someone is left standing. That's what it came down to. Tyrone didn't blink. We didn't blink. It was just a showdown. Everyone got their money's worth tonight."
"Give them credit," Tyrone head coach John Franco said. "I'm a big Tim Janocko fan. I think he does a great job. Forrest Campman does an excellent job. You can see the tradition in their program is similar to ours. You had two excellent high school football teams giving everybody every penny's worth."
The squads traded touchdowns at a feverish pace in the first half, as the first six drives of the game ended with touchdowns with the Bisons taking a 21-18 lead into the half.
The defenses got into the act in the second half, each coming up with huge stops. Clearfield made the final stand, stopping a Tyrone drive at the Bison 27-yard line and forcing a 45-yard field goal try that was short and wide with 1:29 left on the clock.
Tyrone erased an early, 28-18, third-quarter deficit, scoring on consecutive drives to take a 32-28 lead on the first play in the fourth quarter.
But Clearfield answered with a 10-play, 59-yard drive that culminated with a Jarrin Campman to Trey Campman 17-yard touchdown pass, giving the Bisons a 35-32 lead with 6:59 left to play.
Tyrone punted on its next possession and pinned the Bisons deep inside their 15-yard line. Just four plays later, Clearfield, which was punting from the shadow of its goal post, chose to take a safety, and put the game in the hands of its defense.
The Eagles set up shop at the Clearfield 42-yard line after the free kick and quickly worked the ball to the Bison 27 as Mark Mingle caught a 9-yard pass from Levi Reihart and ran the ball for a 6-yard gain on the next play.
But Clearfield, which surrendered 388 yards to the Tyrone offense on the night, came up with a pair of big stops on the next two running plays, forcing the Eagles into a third-and-9 situation. Tyrone tried a throwback pass from Mingle to Reihart, but the Bison pressure was too heavy and the play never developed.
That forced Franco into the decision to kick the field goal.
"Really, (Clearfield) stopped us on the first two downs, and that was the big problem," Franco said. "It was third-and-9, and we weren't able to get that throwback pass. I'll have to see what happened, but I think they got too much pressure on us."
"We thought if we punted from our own end zone, they would get the ball on the 30- or 35-yard line," Janocko said. "We wanted to make them beat our defense. If you're going to beat a team like Tyrone and snap that streak, you have to play to the end. Somebody has to make some big plays, and we made some big plays at the end."
Tyrone got on the scoreboard first, setting up at its own 37-yard line on the opening kickoff. The Eagles went 63 yards in eight plays with Larry Glace going the final six yards for the score at 8:01. Tyrone missed the PAT - which was a recurring theme on the night - and had a 6-0 lead.
Clearfield responded with its own impressive drive, which covered 70 yards in 10 plays. Isiah Morgan went off right tackle and busted the play to the outside for a 23-yard touchdown run at 4:06. Parker Herrington added the extra point to give the Bisons a 7-6 lead.
But the Golden Eagles answered. Reihart hit a pair of 34-yard passes, finding Ben Ingle early in the drive and connecting with John Shaffer three plays later on a third down play, taking the ball to the Bison 9. Mingle scored on the next play, but Tyrone missed the extra point again and led just 12-7.
It didn't take Clearfield long to regain the lead as the Bisons moved 56 yards in just three plays. Jarrin Campman rolled to his right and found Derek Danver, who got behind the defense, for a 34-yard touchdown connection. Herrington's PAT put the Bisons back in front, 14-12 just 10 seconds into the second quarter.
Not to be outdone, Tyrone bested Clearfield's three-play scoring drive by finding the end zone in just two plays.
Mingle went 15 yards on the first snap and Glace finished off the 65-yard drive with a 50-yard run right up the middle. Tyrone's 2-point conversion failed, and the Golden Eagles held an 18-14 advantage. Glace ran for 120 yard on 21 carries.
The Bisons set up their next series at the 20-yard line and took four minutes off the clock with a nine-play drive that culminated with an 8-yard Jarrin Campman run on a sweep. Campman hooked up with brother Trey on consecutive passes for 18 and 13 yards and found him again in the drive for a 6-yard gain. Morgan rumbled for 34 yards on three plays in the drive.
Herrington's extra point gave the Bisons a 21-18 advantage at that point, and Clearfield took that lead to the halftime break.
Clearfield took the only double-digit lead of the contest at the 9:57 mark of the second half when Morgan finished off the opening series with a 16-yard touchdown run. He ran for 32 yards on three carries in the drive, and Jarrin Campman added a 34-yard scamper.
Morgan was a big key to the Bisons' success, as he rumbled for 143 yards and two scores on 18 carries.
"Isiah Morgan just had a super night," Janocko said. "He's finally healthy. Morgan's the key to our offense. He opens up other things. It opens us being able to run the ball with Jarrin, and it opens the passing game. Isiah was running with heart. When he's running like that, he's tough. He runs a 4.6 40 (yard dash), and he's 185 pounds of muscle. He can hurt you.
"This was probably the biggest night of his career."
But Tyrone wasn't done. The Golden Eagles scored just 1:35 later when Reihart hit Eric Desch for a 66-yard scoring strike. Tyrone got the 2-point conversion and just like that, it only trailed 28-26.
The Golden Eagle defense came up with the only three-and-out of the night, stopping Clearfield in its tracks and forcing a punt.
Tyrone then went on a 15-play drive that ate up 6:17 off the clock, ending with Reihart scoring from nine yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter. But for the third time in the game, the extra point failed, giving Tyrone a 32-28 lead.
Trailing for the first time since the second quarter and coming off a drive that netted (-1) yard, Clearfield needed to respond - and respond it did.
The Bisons traveled 59 yards in 10 plays, taking nearly five minutes off the clock before the Campman connection helped Clearfield regain the lead - for good.
Jarrin hit Trey for the 17-yard touchdown pass that featured Trey laying out for the ball and diving across the goal line for the score.
A key in the drive, according to Janocko, was a second down play where Jarrin Campman hit Brandon Sass for eight yards and a first down under heavy pressure.
"We caught them in a blitz, and we had a hot call to Brandon Sass," Janocko said. "That was a huge play for a first down."
Campman completed 9 of 13 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed the ball 19 times for 66 yards and a score. And the senior signal-caller drew high praise from the opposing coach.
"They've just got some outstanding football players," Franco said. "That was the key. (Campman) is the best quarterback I've seen in years. If he's not first-team, all-state, there's something wrong."
Herrington made the all-important extra point to give the Bisons a three-point advantage, 35-32.
"Parker has been worth his weight in gold for us, and I have to credit my daughter (Annie) because she is the one who recruited him," Janocko said. "He's just been great for us for two years."
Tyrone moved the ball to the Bison 45 on its next possession, but was forced to punt as the Clearfield defense, led by Andre Buck, supplied intense pressure. Buck made a stop on a rushing play that went nowhere, then hurried Reihart on third down, which caused an incompletion.
"We went to a different defense and stood him up," Janocko said of Buck. "That was key. Andre played a great game. That's the first game he's ever played standing up. We've been depleted at linebacker since the DuBois game. We decided we needed to change some things around."
Clearfield ran a 5-3 defense with Robert Faust getting his first start at nose tackle.
"He's 330 pounds. He's going to take up some space in there and help our linebackers make plays," Janocko said. "He played well."
The ensuing Tyrone punt set up the end-of-game drama that ended with the 45-yard missed field goal.
"We didn't want a 14-7 game," Janocko said. "We wanted to get in a shootout and go back and forth with the way we can move the ball. I thought our offensive line did a great job against a good defense.
"It's a big win for us in the league. It's a big win," Janocko said. We have a lot of respect for Tyrone and for John Franco and his coaching staff. Their whole team and their coaches are a class act. That's tough for them to lose that streak tonight. That's not an easy thing. Their kids played hard and they handled themselves very well."
Clearfield improved to 3-1. The Bisons travel to Lewistown on Friday.
