Campus Roundup: Fall athletes making their mark

A handful of local athletes are participating in sports at several colleges this fall. Here's a look at what some of those individuals are accomplishing.

Football

Andrew Janocko, Pittsburgh: Janocko has played  in both of the Panthers' games this season as the holder on extra points and field goals. Pittsburgh has made five extra points and three field goals.

Tanner Kelly, Albright: The Clearfield graduate has gotten off to another quick start for Albright, as he recently led his team to a 30-27 win over Western Connecticut on Saturday. Kelly connected on a 13-yard touchdown pass with 34 seconds left to lift his team to the win. On the season, Kelly has 368 yards through the air to go along with five touchdowns and just one interception.

Mike Rocco, Lock Haven: Rocco has seen action in one game for Lock Haven (0-3) and recorded a tackle during his playing time.

Beau Ryan, Juniata: Ryan has played in both games for the Eagles (0-2), and has three tackles to his credit.

Nate Sipes, Slippery Rock: Sipes has played in all three games this season, and has accumulated 10 tackles for The Rock (2-1).

Nick Sipes, Clarion: Sipes has thrived this season after being switched to running back from safety. The Curwensville graduate has gained 187 yards on 26 carries and has two touchdowns to his credit for the Golden Eagles (1-2). Sipes' best game came in a Week 3 loss to East Stroudsburg when he carried 17 times for 120 yards and a score.

Brad Sopic, Clarion: Sopic has continued to do well in the secondary for Clarion, as he has the Eagles' lone interception. The sophomore safety is also third on the team with 20 tackles and has two pass breakups to his credit.

Gary Walstrom Jr., Valley Forge: Walstrom was named a co-captain for Valley Forge this fall, and is currently a starting linebacker. The Glendale graduate compiled 13 tackles, forced a fumble and had a hurry in a 12-0 win over Radford.

Clearfield's Devin Yastro (Juniata) David Ryan (Lycoming) and Tyler Kirkwood (Grove City), Curwensville's J.D. Skebo (Slippery Rock), Glendale's Matt Irvine (Westminster) and Tyler Thomas (Juniata), Moshannon Valley's Ryan Gmerek (Penn State), Brandon Murarik (Slippery Rock) and Andy Stine (Thiel), Philipsburg-Osceola's J.D. Mason (Penn State), Jon Whitman (Mansfield) and Josh Bucior (Mansfield), Purchase Line's Logan Small (Clarion) and West Branch's Jonny Demchak (Westminster) are also on their college's respective rosters.

 

Volleyball

Erin Albert, Juniata: The Lady Eagle middle hitter was named Juniata's Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sept. 12. Albert led Juniata to three wins, including two over nationally ranked opponents. The former Lady Mountie had 33 kills during those games to go along with four aces, eight digs and 10 blocks. Albert is also featured on the Juniata webpage for writing a blog on NCAA.com.

Danica Hamm: Penn State-DuBois: Hamm is a setter for Penn State-DuBois, which is currently 0-2 on the season. The West Branch graduate totaled 18 assists and five aces in an opening match loss to Mercyhurst Northeast College on Sept. 11.

Amanda Knowles, Mount Aloysius: Knowles has led the Lady Mounties to a 4-8 record, including a stretch where they've won three of their last four. The former P-O athlete leads the Mount in kills (74) and is second in blocks (22).

Michelle Peoples, Mount Aloysius: The Glendale graduate has 10 kills and four aces to her credit for the Mount, and has started in every game this season.

Haley White, Clarion: White is listed as a middle hitter/defensive specialist on the roster for the Lady Eagles (10-5).

 

Boys Soccer

Mark Auman, Lock Haven: Auman has started five games for Lock Haven, and had an assist on a game-winning goal against Mercy.

Alan Baldwin, Westminster: The former Clearfield defender got his first start for Westminster and helped his team shut out Pitt-Greensburg, 3-0;

Lucas Feathers, Slippery Rock: The Rock has been paced by Feathers' play this fall, as the former Bison is second on the team in points, goals, shots and shots on goal. Feathers, who has seven points and three goals, has scored in four-straight games with an assist in Slippery Rock's win over Seton Hill.

John Lhota, Washington & Jefferson: Lhota has played in all six games for the Presidents, including registering two starts. Lhota has taken three shots this season.

 

Girls Soccer

Julianna Howell, Slippery Rock: Howell has started in all six of The Rock's games and has five points to her credit. Howell has tallied two goals on five shots, and has one assist for five points on the season. Slippery Rock (4-1-1) lost its first game, 2-1, on Wednesday to Mercyhurst College.

Alissa Murphy, Juniata: Murphy has appeared in four games for the Eagles, and has tallied one shot on goal. Juniata is 5-0 on the season.

Danielle Struble, Westminster: A transfer from Pitt-Greensburg, Struble has started in three of Westminster's six games. Struble has registered six shots on goal for the Titans.

Jen Williams, Lock Haven: Williams has come off the bench in six games for the Lady Eagles, and had an assist in their 2-0 win over Pitt-Johnstown.

Ali Yaple, Mount Aloysius: Yaple has started all four games for the Lady Mounties and has one shot on goal. The former Damsel also has a game at goalkeeper under her belt in which she picked up a win. Yaple made two saves in picking up the win.

 

Cross Country

Adam Cummings, Penn State-DuBois: A Curwensville alum, Cummings is competing for Penn State-DuBois, which travels to Penn State-Worthington Scranton on Saturday.

Leah Carr, Penn State-DuBois: Carr recently finished in 16th place during the Johns College Invitational - Penn State-DuBois' first meet - while the Lady Lions finished in third place overall.

Joe Komisar, Slippery Rock: Komisar is running for The Rock, which recently finished second out of 11 teams in the California (Pa.) Invitational. Slippery Rock will compete again Saturday at the IUP Invitational.

 

All former area athletes who play a sanctioned college sport are eligible to be recognized by The Progress for their athletic endeavors in the College Roundup.
