HYDE - On the opening weekend of the 2008 season, the Clearfield girls soccer team was shut out by Altoona at the Bellefonte tournament. Fast forward just 18 days, and the result was completely different.
The Lady Bisons got off to an early 1-0 lead and never trailed, coming away with a convincing, 4-2, victory Tuesday at the Bison Sports Complex.
Clearfield (4-4) has won its last two games sporting a new lineup that has been very effective. Moving Lisa Bumbarger to sweeper, Abby Fishbone to inside mid, Julia Ammerman to outside mid and Candice Morgan to defense has made a world of difference for the Lady Bisons, according to head coach Jen Wright.
"The first game (against Altoona) was just our second of the season," she said. "We were still working on our lineup combinations. This is just the second game with the current lineup, but the girls are really working well together. They are starting to jell."
A pair of players who have been in the same spot since the beginning of the year came up big offensively for Clearfield. B.J. Bowman scored a pair of first-half goals, while Brooke Mohney added two key assists. Ammerman and Mia Keener had the other scores.
Bowman got the Lady Bisons off and running with a score just 12:45 into the contest. She took a cross pass from Ammerman and beat Altoona keeper Jordan Zilla to her left, giving Clearfield the much-needed 1-0 lead.
"When you lose to a team on the first go-around, it's important to get that first goal in the next game," Wright said. "Scoring first boosts your confidence and settles your nerves."
Clearfield held on to the 1-0 advantage for the rest of the half, as a nearly impenetrable defense kept the Little Lions off the scoreboard, limiting them to just four first-half shots.
"Our defense held strong," Wright said. "Lisa is good at getting to the ball and getting it out, and Emily (Barger), Janell (Zalno) and Candice are all good at support. They didn't panic when Altoona worked the ball into our end."
The Lady Bisons came out a little flat to start the second half, and Altoona possessed the ball from the kickoff for the first six minutes before Clearfield was able to clear.
But once the Lady Bisons went back on the attack, it didn't take long for them to once again find the back of the net.
Mohney sent a pass to Bowman, who blasted the ball from just outside the goal box. The ball rung off the inside of the far post and went straight down and into the Lady Lion goal.
"She just ran through it," Wright said. "We keep telling the girls to take shots when they have a chance, and B.J. did that."
The Lady Lions made some halftime adjustments that began to pay off, as Altoona held possession for much of the early part of the second half. Rikki Miller moved from defense to midfield, and the Lady Lions began to generate more offense.
Miller got Altoona on the board at 54:29 when she received a pass from Nicole Settimio, took a touch and hammered the ball top shelf over Clearfield keeper Brandie Centi.
"They made some adjustments," Wright said. "They started man-marking Ammerman and they moved (Miller) from the back. That gave them a boost."
But Clearfield answered a little over five minutes later, courtesy of Mia Keener, who took advantage of a low goal kick from Zilla.
Keener jumped up and got in front of the kick at about the 25-yard line. She settled the ball and then got a good foot on it, sending it over Zilla and just under the crossbar to once again give the Lady Bisons a two-goal cushion.
"You never know when you may get your chance," Wright said. "Mia took the opportunity and finished strong."
Altoona answered at 69:22 when Miller sent a pass from midfield to Bre Lander, who was bolting down the left wing. She got behind the Clearfield defense and pushed a shot past Centi to make the score, 3-2.
But once again, the Lady Bisons were up to the task.
They took control of the game from there, keeping the ball on the Clearfield side of the midfield line and eventually working their way to a highlight reel goal.
"It seems like once the other team scores, we go flat," Wright said. "It takes the wind out of our sails and we hit the panic button. But we didn't let that happen today. We need to keep playing aggressively and keep our intensity up in those situations, and we did that."
Mohney took the ball down the right wing, dribbling around an Altoona defender, and then sent a perfect cross pass to the far post. There, Ammerman charged into the goal box and headed the ball past Zilla and into the back of the Lady Lion net with just 3:26 left to play.
"Mohney took the ball down the field and sent a perfect cross into the middle, and Julia was there," Wright said. "It was an awesome goal."
The Clearfield defense held Altoona to just 10 shots, and Centi made four saves.
"Brandie helped us keep our intensity and directing traffic, and she came up with some big saves. Our outside mids (Ammerman and Katlyn Reddinger) played both sides of the field well. They helped with the offensive attack and got back to help on defense. And our inside mids (starters Fishbone and Nichole Powers and backups Hannah Reifer and Jess Maines) did a good job helping us keep our shape and distributing the ball."
Clearfield is back in action Monday at Hollidaysburg.
