Clearfield uses fourth-quarter push to beat Indian Valley, 35-20
Saturday, September 13, 2008
By Rich Murawski Assistant Sports Editor
HYDE - Clinging to a 21-20 lead with 10:27 to play in the third quarter after just giving up an 85-yard touchdown run, the Clearfield football team needed to get the momentum back in its corner.

So head coach Tim Janocko turned to a two-pronged rushing attack featuring the power of tailback Isiah Morgan and the quickness of quarterback Jarrin Campman.

The result was a pair of long touchdown drives that saw the senior backfield alternate slashing and crashing through the Indian Valley defense as the Bisons topped the Warriors, 35-20, Friday at the Bison Sports Complex.

"Isiah came back (from last week's injury) and did some pounding for us," Janocko said. "And that opens up Jarrin. Jarrin had a big night. He was the difference tonight."

Campman carried the ball 27 times for 136 yards and scored four touchdowns. He also tossed a touchdown pass, while completing 9 of 16 attempts for 105 yards. Morgan accounted for 96 tough yards on the ground on 17 rushes. He ran for 84 of those yards in the second half.

"That gives us two weapons back there," Janocko said. "When you have Isiah and Jarrin running the ball and Jarrin throwing the ball, you're pretty potent offensively."

After giving up a pair of long touchdowns to Indian Valley in the first half, the Bison defense never got a hand on Nickolas Myers, who burst through a hole in the middle of the Bison defense and raced 85 yards for a score. The Warriors passed for a 2-point conversion to pull to within a point of the Bisons.

"We said from the beginning he is a good player," Janocko said of Myers. "We knew that. We still have a long way to go. We're playing a lot of young kids. We're still a little banged up. We're just waiting for these younger kids to mature.

"We're making some mistakes, but we're making some big plays, too. Again we had three sophomores and a freshman at linebacker and cornerback."

The teams traded punts after the Myers score, and Clearfield set up shop at its own 14-yard line with 5:39 to go in the third quarter.

Clearfield drove the ball 86 yards in just six plays as Morgan and Campman took turns burning the Warrior defense.

Morgan had a pair of punishing 22-yard runs in the possession, while Campman busted off a 32-yard touchdown run with 2:46 left in the quarter. Campman drew in the defense with a nice fake to Morgan, and then the Bison quarterback slipped through a hole in the defense and dashed to the Warrior goal line. Parker Herrington's fourth PAT of the game gave Clearfield a 28-20 lead.

The Clearfield defense forced a three-and-out on the next Indian Valley drive, but the Warriors had a trick up their sleeve as they faked the punt and looked to pass for the first down.

Bison Jack Mellgard wasn't fooled. He reached up and snatched the ball out of the air with one hand, setting the Clearfield offense up at the Bison 44-yard line.

"That was a big play by Jack," Janocko said. "He's a sophomore out there in his first year with us, and he made a huge play."

From there, Clearfield went on a 12-play, 52-yard drive that took over six minutes off the clock. It ended with Campman scoring his fourth touchdown of the night from six yards out.

Clearfield converted a fourth down play on the drive and had five of its 23 first downs on the possession. Janocko credits strong play from his offensive line of center Nick Redden, guards Andre Buck and Zack Stephens and tackles Cruise Kerr and Braden Dixon as a key in the second-half surge.

"We had some big first downs," Janocko said. "We made some big runs. Our offensive line really did a good job. They kind of took the ball game over in the third and fourth quarter."

Indian Valley tried to answer the Bison score, but after moving from its own 28-yard line to the Bison 17, quarterback William Long threw a pass to the goal line that was picked off by Clearfield's Trey Campman.

Clearfield moved the chains twice, courtesy of Morgan, and effectively ran out the clock.

"We did a good job, but we need to continue to improve," Janocko said. "I thought we made some mistakes in the first half. We just weren't focused enough. But we made some defensive stands when we had to. And we made some big runs when we had to."

Indian Valley opened the scoring as Myers took the opening kickoff 95 yards for a score, giving the Warriors a 6-0 advantage just 19 seconds into the game.

But Clearfield shook off the disappointing start to the game and drove the ball 60 yards in 12 plays. Campman hit Derek Morgan on a slant pattern on fourth-and-goal from the 20-yard line for a touchdown. Morgan alertly stretched the ball over the goal line as he was getting tackled.

"That was real important," Janocko said. "You give up a touchdown on the opening kick ... that's not the way you want to start the game. But (Myers) made a nice run, and he's a good athlete. But we answered it, and that's important."

On the next Warrior possession, Long fumbled and Bison linebacker Scott Nishida was there to pounce on the ball. The Bisons took advantage of the big defensive play, going 48 yards in six plays with Campman finishing things off with an 8-yard score.

Nishida was at it again on the next Warrior possession. This time, he and Kerr got heavy pressure on the Indian Valley punter and partially blocked the kick.

The duo also combined for a huge sack of Long in the third quarter, which forced a Warrior punt. The sack came just seven plays before the Campman 32-yard touchdown.

"We moved Nishida to inside linebacker because of (Josh) Rippey getting hurt," Janocko said. "I thought for his first game there he did a good job."

Clearfield improved to 2-1, while Indian Valley fell to 1-2.

The Bisons are back in action Friday, playing host to perennial District 6 class AA power Tyrone.

NOTES: Myers rushed for 130 yards on five carries and had 179 return yards on four kickoffs ... Long ran for 84 yards on 12 carries and had a 45-yard second-quarter touchdown ... Campman connected with five different Bison receivers. Trey Campman had three catches for 20 yards. Derek Danver caught two for 28 yards and Derek Morgan had two receptions for 34 yards. Brandon Sass and Alex Angstadt also hauled in Campman passes.
