HYDE - With starters Becca Davis and Jayme Ryan out for the season and several other girls playing injured, the Clearfield girls soccer team is having a tough time jelling on the field. That was evident in Tuesday's 5-0 loss to rival DuBois at the Bison Sports Complex.
"Our girls are banged up," Clearfield head coach Jen Wright said. "It's frustrating. We can't get into a playing groove with a consistent starting lineup."
Lady Bison junior Brooke Mohney also left the game with an injury, putting another hole in the lineup. At one point in the contest, Clearfield had four freshmen on the field.
"We're still a young team," Wright said. "And there is a lack of experience. But you can't take anything away from DuBois. They got their shots. Some of the their goals were earned, and some were because of our mistakes."
Lady Beaver sophomore Alyssa Sciremammano notched a hat trick for DuBois, while Bethany Naugle scored a goal and added two assists.
Naugle set up the first DuBois goal, feeding Meagan Sanko, who beat Clearfield keeper Brandie Centi at 19:55.
From that point on in the first half, the Lady Beavers pressured the Clearfield net relentlessly. The Lady Bisons were unable to connect enough passes to get the ball out of their end and when they tried to clear, DuBois came up with the loose ball a majority of the time.
"We doing some ball watching," Wright said. "We weren't anticipating the next pass. We just didn't seem to click as a team. We got out of sync and just weren't playing smart. We weren't playing the ball to feet, and we were giving up a lot of 50/50 balls.
Meanwhile, the Lady Beavers were making good passes and getting their forwards open in the goal box.
Sciremammano scored her first goal at 29:35, setting up in the slot and getting one touch on the ball before blasting a shot to the top of the net. Morgan Hanna set her up with a cross pass from the left wing.
With less than three minutes to go in the half, Naugle took a drop pass from Kendra Smith and blistered a shot past Centi from about 25 yards out.
Clearfield did a better job of controlling the ball and setting up the offense in the second half.
The Lady Bisons held the ball in the DuBois end for the early part of the second, but couldn't get a quality shot on goal.
"We played much better in the second half," Wright said. "We had our moments where we were passing and moving. But when we went flat, we really went flat."
After withstanding the Clearfield pressure, DuBois broke out of its end and retook control of the game.
Sciremammano beat the Lady Bison defense to a loose ball in the box and booted it by Centi at 49:52 to give DuBois a 4-0 lead.
She completed the hat trick at 59:33, scoring off a Naugle pass.
"This game will be a building block for us," Wright said. "If we were a healthy team, things may have been different. But that's just the nature of the beast. Every team has to deal with that at one time or another."
Lisa Bumbarger and B.J. Bowman led Clearfield with three shots each. Centi made 10 saves.
Clearfield (1-2) is back in action Thursday at Punxsutawney.
