Clearfield volleyball falls in straight sets to visiting Punxsutawney
Wednesday, September 03, 2008
By Jon Christoff Sports Writer
HYDE - Clearfield volleyball coach Bob Peters knew his Lady Bisons' opener with Punxsutawney on Tuesday night would be a good measuring stick.

The Lady Chucks gained the momentum early in the first set and cruised to a three-set win, 25-11, 25-16 and 25-8.

While his team may not have been as close as he would have liked, Peters was still pleased with how it performed against a quality opponent.

"Their skill, right now, is probably a little bit better than ours," said Peters. "I told the girls that it was a measuring stick we could go by, and that's what we can work up to. If we keep improving, we play them again. It'll be at their home field, but you never know what's going to happen.

"We served well. We had a couple of bad breaks. If the ball bounced one way or the other, we would have got the point instead of losing the point. Overall, I'm pleased with tonight's performance."

The story in the first set was Punxsy's ability to serve, while the Lady Bisons, in turn, had trouble with scoring any points with theirs.

The Lady Chucks' Holly Setree and Alexis Bianco had runs of five and six, respectively, to key the Punxsy offense. Setree added another run of three to close out the first set.

"I think we were out of position a little bit," Peters said of the first set. "We weren't quite ready for it because we were out of position. They have some good servers."

Clearfield reserve Sophia Reed got the ball rolling from behind the serving line, reeling off three straight service points, including an ace. Jennie Knepp added the Lady Bisons' final point on a serve before the Lady Chucks got a sideout and closed out the set.

In all, Punxsy finished with 53 service points to the Lady Bisons' 14.

"I thought we did a lot better serving than we did in the past," said Peters, whose team only had four missed serves. "We had very few faults on our serves."

In addition to their strong serving, Setree and Bianco also made their presence known at the net. Bianco led all players with nine kills and added a block to her credit, while Setree had seven kills.

"They were just too tall," Peters said of Punxsy. "We're a small team, size-wise. We'd hit it into their big people, and a lot of times they'd spike it on us. We just couldn't stop it."

The second set was the best Clearfield played in the match, as it was able to hang with the Lady Chucks until late.

Punxsutawney got another big service run, this one by Brittany Aaron, to make a 12-6 lead a 12-point advantage.

Knepp responded with five of her team-high service points to chip away, and Samantha Broad added one of her own to bring Clearfield to within seven, but Punxsy was able to close it out.

Knepp finished with a pair of kills to her credit, while Ashlie Gearhart had team highs in kills (three) and blocks (two).

"I was really pleased with the second set," Peters said. "We played well. If we can keep that intensity and keep going, we'll be all right."

The Lady Chucks made quick work of Clearfield in the third after gaining the momentum early in the set.

The Lady Bisons were within four points, but the serving, again, proved to be the difference. Clearfield was outserved 19-2 in the set.

"It's hard to come back once you're down two games," said Peters. "If they start rolling again it's hard, no matter what sport it is, to get back into it. You have to keep your intensity up all the time if you're going to keep up with a team like them."

Clearfield (0-1) will look to crack the win column on Thursday when it hosts DuBois Central Catholic.
