HYDE - The Clearfield girls tennis team picked up a couple of solid individual victories on Tuesday but ultimately fell to visiting Johnsonburg 7-2.
"(On Monday against Punxsutawney) we didn't have a great effort in the singles, but we didn't do too badly in the doubles," Clearfield head coach Mike Sciabica said. "Today it was kind of the other way around. We did get some good efforts in the singles, but then the doubles kind of fell apart on us. We're going to have to find a way to play both ends of the match, not just part of it."
Moving into the No. 1 slot for the Lady Bisons in 2008, Jenny Miller fought off Johnsonburg's Abby Grumley, needing a tiebreaker to pick up her first victory of the year.
Madison Sopic also came out on top for Clearfield, defeating Tiffany Wolf handily in the first set, 6-0, and then wrapping things up with a 7-5 second-set win.
"I've got to give some credit to Jenny and Madison," Sciabica said. "Those were both good wins, and sometimes your first win helps lead you to more wins. Jenny beat a good player, so that's a good win for her."
Miller took the first set 6-4, but never threatened in the second set as she fell 6-1. She bounced back in the tiebreak set, going up 10-4 to take the match.
"Playing No. 1 for any team is a difficult task because you're always playing the opponent's best player," Sciabica said. "You have to get a win or two under your belt before you begin to make it a habit, and for that reason today's win was an important one for her."
The other three singles contests went to Johnsonburg as No. 2 Ellie Kocjancic topped Emily Von Gunden 7-5, 6-0, Laura Stahli downed Julie Colesar 6-2, 6-1 and Teresina Imbrogno defeated Kayla White in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
Clearfield found the going even harder in doubles action, with Johnsonburg sweeping all four matches to lock up the team victory.
The Lady Rams' top pairing of Grumley and Kocjancic - defending district champs - played their way to an 8-4 win over Miller and Von Gunden.
The rest of Johnsonburg's twosomes followed suit, with Whitney Barber and Bailey Pritt winning 8-1 over Colesar and White and Krista Jacobs and Nikki Oler sliding to an 8-4 win over Sopic and Angela Moore.
Clearfield's best chance came in the final doubles match of the day, but Kristen McKenzie and Sierra Grice fell just short, dropping the match 8-6 to Dana Nelson and Thea Distler.
The Lady Bisons fell to 0-2 on the season, and will look to get things turned in the right direction against a difficult upcoming schedule. They will travel to Elk County Catholic on Thursday.
"We're a classic example of what happens when you lose your No. 1," Sciabica said. "Everyone moves up a spot and matches they were in last year they find a lot tougher this year.
"I think part of it is emotional in that they need to realize that, yes, there are teams they can beat, but they have to be ready to play and they have to play with intensity the whole time they're out there. I think if we can do that then they can play up to their potential."
