Local filmmaker's thriller to air at Rowland Saturday
Friday, June 13, 2008
By Timothy Nebgen Staff Writer
PHILIPSBURG - The Historic Rowland Theatre on North Front Street in Philipsburg will be the site at which screenwriter, producer and director Spencer T. Folmar of Grassflat premiers his first feature-length independent film. "Fortified," a 55-minute thriller filmed in and around Drifting, will open for a one-night engagement at 7 p.m. Saturday.

"I really wanted to make an independent film," said Mr. Folmar, a member of the 2008 graduating class at West Branch Area High School. "I knew it was going to be very difficult and a lot of people say they're going to do it and never do."

He said the plot centers on a pair of college-age students fleeing from an unidentified enemy force. The duo takes refuge in what appears to be an abandoned building, but they quickly discover the building they thought was empty is anything but.

Mr. Folmar said he became interested in filmmaking in his sophomore year at West Branch when he and a group of students were given a choice of making a poster or a short film for their Safety Education class. He said his group elected to make a video titled "Golf Safety."

It became such a hit among the student body and faculty that he decided to make more short films and post them on the popular video-sharing Web site "YouTube." He has posted 35 videos since joining the site.

"I knew I just wanted to keep going up," said Mr. Folmar.

Production on "Fortified" got under way in the summer of 2007 while Mr. Folmar and his cast and crew were enjoying their summer vacations. He said he drafted the screenplay and got filming under way by July under the banner of his production company, "SpenceTF Productions."

Filming took place from about 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. from  July to August, in an  old  gas station that  has  since  been  demolished.

Mr. Folmar said his friends and family were very supportive during the course of the production, with many of them turning out to appear as extras in the film and helping with various film crew duties. His sister, Holly Folmar, handled the camera operating duties under the banner of her photography company "Delighted Heart Photography."

The music was composed by Michael Hughes and The Worry Knot.

From there it was to the editing room, where Mr. Folmar said he learned to appreciate the versatility of the Apple computer and Apple Final Cut Studio 2 editing software. He said he made approximately eight cuts of the film before the editing process was complete.

"SpenceTF Productions" is not likely to be a one-hit wonder. Mr. Folmar said production is already under way on the company's second feature and that audiences may be treated to "Golf Safety: The Movie" sometime next summer. He said it would be an ideal way of bringing the company full circle.

In the meantime, the company has diversified into filming weddings and documentaries, transferring VHS to DVD and consulting work.

Mr. Folmar will be attending Grove City College, pursuing a degree in political science.

Admission to "Fortified" costs $5. Merchandise and refreshments will be available.

The film, which stars Alyssa Fyock as Charlotte, Justine Hubler as Helen, Emily Kephart as Elizabeth, Frederick Hickman as John and Mr. Folmar as Ben, will be preceded by a short film also produced by SpenceTF Productions, as well as promotions for future productions.

"It's a very suspenseful thriller," Mr. Folmar said of "Fortified," but it is nevertheless appropriate for audiences age 8 and up.

When asked how he thinks audiences will receive the film, he said "It'd be great to get a full house. I really expect a good turnout."
