HYDE - The Clearfield softball team smacked 12 hits, and Mandy Rowles scattered a pair of hits and recorded six strikeouts from the pitcher's circle in Tuesday afternoon's 13-3 win over visiting St. Marys in five innings. The top three hitters in the Lady Bisons' lineup finished the game 9-for-9 with eight runs scored, while Rowles, Julie Colesar and Alyssa Anderson each drove in a pair of runs in helping Clearfield improve to 10-4 on the season.
"That's not too bad," said Clearfield head coach Bob Dixon of his team's hitting. "St. Marys battled valiantly, and they're trying to bring that team up. They were out there giving it their all."
After allowing a run to the Lady Dutch in the top of the first inning, Clearfield responded with three of its own in the bottom half.
Leadoff hitter Alanna Luzier, who had three hits, began the frame with a bunt base hit, and Megan Butler followed with one of her own to put runners on the corners after Luzier had stolen second base.
Ashley Lias followed with an RBI single, and Colesar had an RBI groundout two batters later. Lias came home on an error for the third run for Clearfield.
After a scoreless second, the Lady Bisons all but put it away in the bottom of the third by plating five more runs.
The top of the lineup was at it again, as Luzier and Butler connected on back-to-back doubles to get the inning started. Lias and Rowles followed the doubles with consecutive singles with the latter plating a run, and Kenzie McGovern added an RBI groundout to cap the scoring.
The Lady Dutch pushed a pair of runs across in the fourth, one of which came in on a double by Macy Rupprecht. Rupprecht later scored on an error to make it an 8-3 game.
"We played a good game defensively, and Mandy threw a real nice game," Dixon said. "We had the one inning where she got a little bit off-kilter, but she came back."
Clearfield responded with four more in the bottom of the inning to pull to within a run of enforcing the 10-run rule. Colesar had an RBI single and Anderson followed with a two-run single to lead the Lady Bisons.
Carrie Harbold singled leading off the bottom of the fifth, and Butler followed with a walk. Lias sacrificed the runners over, and Rowles ended the game with a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Bisons are back in action Thursday at Brookville.
"All-in-all, we played a pretty good game," said Dixon. "We're just building up from St. Marys on to Brookville, and then right into the heat with DuBois (on Monday). We're looking forward to next week, but we won't look past Brookville."
