Philipsburg-Osceola softball downs Clearfield to win its own tournament
Monday, April 28, 2008
By Jon Christoff Sports Writer
PHILIPSBURG - The Clearfield softball team found out first hand how quickly a game can get away from you if you give a good team extra outs.

Philipsburg-Osceola parlayed six Lady Bisons errors in the finals of the Mountaineer Tournament on Saturday afternoon and turned it into an 11-0 win in five innings, ending Clearfield's eight-game winning streak.

"It's a nice rivalry," said P-O head coach Jim Gonder. "A lot of these girls played summer ball together, and there's a lot of friendships there. They have some very good hitters, and (Clearfield pitcher Mandy Rowles) is a better pitcher than that. She does a nice job for them."

Rowles, who scattered four hits against Northern Cambria in Clearfield's first game, ran into problems early and often, as the Lady Mounties didn't take long to get on the scoreboard.

Lyndz Kephart and Mackenzie Wilson reached base after a strikeout opened the bottom of the first, and cleanup hitter Taylor Harpster began her monster game at the plate with a two-run double to deep left field.

Harpster finished the game with three hits and five RBIs.

"We did a nice job with our baserunning, and Taylor came through with a couple of clutch hits," Gonder said. "We had hitting from top to bottom, I thought. The girls did a nice job."

While the Lady Mounties were able to push some runs across against Rowles, pitcher Brittany Murphy was close to perfect.

Murphy only allowed one hit in the game, and Harpster quickly erased Alyssa Anderson by picking her off first base.

P-O put the game away in the third and took advantage of three Clearfield errors for a six-run inning.

Chasity Myers led the charge with a two-run double of her own, while Harpster, Chelsea Rex and Nikki Bumbarger each added an RBI.

Only one of the six runs against Rowles was earned.

"Once we started going bad, we just kept going," said Clearfield head coach Bob Dixon. "The wheels fell off and we got the wood laid to us. ... You can't make mistakes and expect to be in a ballgame with them. They're not going to let you because they're going to hammer you."

Murphy took care of the Clearfield bats in the fourth, and the P-O lineup took care of pushing more runs across to invoke the 10-run rule.

Harpster came up with a long, two-run single off the fence and Rex added a double, as the Lady Mounties added three more runs to set the final.

Murphy set Clearfield down in order once more, and faced the minimum batters in the game. The P-O hurler finished with seven strikeouts.

"She's not overpowering, but she hits her spots consistently, moves the ball in and out, up and down, and changes her speed," Dixon said of Murphy. "She's not going to bowl you over, but you've got to be ready for that pitch. If you get that one good pitch, you've got to hit it because you aren't going to get too many to hit."

P-O improved to 11-3 on the season, while Clearfield dipped to 8-3.

Both teams are back in action today, as the Lady Mounties travel to DuBois and the Lady Bisons host DuBois Central Catholic.

First Round
Philipsburg-Osceola 5,
Hollidaysburg 1
The Lady Mounties faced an early contest from Hollidaysburg in their tournament opener, as the Lady Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the third inning on a home run from Jackie Smith.

P-O responded with the tying run in the bottom of the inning, and then tacked on four more runs the next inning.

Harpster smacked a double for the Lady Mounties, who stole eight bases in the game. Kelsey Gonder paced the six-hit attack for P-O with two of her own, while Kephart scored twice.

Murphy picked up the win after allowing just the one hit in four innings of work. Gonder came in for the last three innings and allowed just a pair of hits. The P-O pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts.

Clearfield 5,
Northern Cambria 3
The Lady Bisons smacked 13 hits and scored all of their runs in the first three innings in a win over the Lady Colts.

Clearfield connected on nine hits through the first three innings, and then had trouble getting anything going the rest of the way.

Ashley Lias opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first and scored when Julie Colesar followed with the first of her four hits in the game.

Megan Butler and Anderson each had three-hit games for Clearfield, which also got an RBI single from Kenzie McGovern.

Rowles stymied the Northern Cambria bats with the exception of the third inning. The Lady Colts collected three of their four hits off Rowles in the stanza, and made it a 5-2 game.

The final Northern Cambria run followed in the next inning on a solo home run.

Rowles struck out seven in the game and walked just one.
