HYDE - Mandy Rowles homered for the third straight game and tossed a complete-game, one-hitter to lead the Clearfield softball team to a 10-0 win over Ridgway Friday afternoon at the Bison Sports Complex. The game lasted just five innings due to the 10-run rule. Rowles gave up just a fifth-inning single to Lady Elker Miki Quattrone and issued a walk. She struck out four batters and got a strong defensive performance behind her.
"She threw a real good ball game," Clearfield head coach Bob Dixon said. "Her ball is moving very well. We started to throw a knuckleball now, and she gets all giddy when we call it. It works. It's a real change of pace for the batter. She can't locate it as well as we'd like, but she's getting there."
On offense the Lady Bisons pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of eight walks. Megan Butler had a career-high three hits, while Alanna Luzier and Sarah Kovalick added two hits each.
"We played good, solid ball," Dixon said. "We fielded the ball well, we hit well, we were aggressive at the plate. We just need to keep getting better. We don't want to peak now, but we want to keep getting better. We have some big games coming up starting the end of the next week. The competition will get a little better, and that's when we need to play well."
Clearfield also stole seven bases, with Luzier swiping two, and moved up five other times on four wild pitches and a passed ball.
"We want to be aggressive on the bases," Dixon said. "We have some team speed this year, and we're going to try and use it."
The Lady Bisons scored one run in the first inning, then added seven in the second.
Kenzie McGovern led off the second inning with a walk and stole second. After a Kovalick strikeout, Carrie Harbold reached on an infield error.
Luzier followed with a two-run double, plating McGovern and Harbold to give Clearfield a 3-0 lead. Luzier was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs and played spectacular defense at shortstop.
"Alanna looked real good in the field," Dixon said. "She made a nice play on the right side of second base on that one ball. She covers a lot of ground. She's going to be missed when she's gone.
"Her bat's starting to come around. She had a real nice hit her second time up. She made things happen on the bases, too. She's got good speed. Her and Butler at the top of the order can move. They make us a 1-2 punch."
Butler, who was 3-for-3 on the day, scored Luzier with double. Butler moved to third on the passed ball and scored on a wild pitch, making the score 5-0.
Ashley Lias walked, stole second and motored to third on Ridgway catcher Brittany Biondi's throwing error. Lias was able to jog to home plate when Rowles connected on a 2-ball, 1-strike pitch and deposited it well over the left-field fence. The two-run jack was her fifth of the season.
Kovalick knocked in Suzie Colesar with a single to finish off the second-inning scoring.
Clearfield put the game on ice in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a pair of runs before the Lady Elkers recorded an out.
Luzier walked, stole second, moved to third on a Butler single and scored when Alyssa Anderson belted a double to left field. Rowles walked on four pitches after the Anderson two-bagger. Butler raced home when ball four was wild, invoking the 10-run rule.
The win was Clearfield's fifth straight.
"Right now I have no complaints," Dixon said. "When we were 0-2, I was scratching my head. But we're working hard in practice and we just need to keep improving."
Clearfield (5-2) is back in action Tuesday, visiting Johnsonburg.
NOTES: Rowles has give up just one unearned run and three hits in her last three starts. She has hit safely in the last five Lady Bison games. In that span, she is batting .667 with three doubles, five home runs and 15 RBIs ... Luzier also has a five-game hitting streak, batting .471 with six runs scored.
