HYDE - An excellent pitching performance by Clearfield's Mandy Rowles saw the junior throw seven innings without allowing an earned run, giving up only two hits and striking out nine as the Lady Bisons' softball team cruised to a 6-1 victory over Brockway on Monday. "That was maybe the best-pitched game I've ever seen her throw," Clearfield head coach Bob Dixon said.
"A lot of times she just rears back and fires, but she was moving the ball really well tonight, the curveball was breaking well, she was locating well with it and I thought she did a really good job. That was excellent."
While Rowles was commanding the contest from the mound, she provided an offensive spark as well, leading off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to left-center field that broke a scoreless tie and got the Lady Bisons' bats rolling.
The Colesar sisters also provided some pop from the plate, as Julie and Suzie picked up two hits each. Suzie also scored two runs.
Julie Colesar came through in the clutch for Clearfield, picking up a big two-out single in the third that drove in two runs and put her team ahead for good, 3-1.
"I'm really pleased. I though we played a solid game tonight," Dixon said. "(This is a good way) to get on a roll and get our sticks working. I thought we were real aggressive at the plate again tonight. I think the girls worked real hard tonight."
That aggressive, but disciplined, attitude in the batter's box was the key to overcoming a generous strike zone, and Clearfield scored another run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to seal the deal.
Meanwhile, many a Brockway batter watched strike three whiz by, and Rowles made sure the outcome was never in doubt as she sat down the Rovers one-two-three in each of the final three innings to pick up the victory.
Brockway got their first batter of the game on with a walk, but saw little success after that. Rowles allowed only three balls to leave the infield all game, and solid defense behind her, especially from second baseman Alanna Luzier, gobbled up any threat.
Rowles boosted her own cause when she blasted the first pitch of the second inning over the outfield fence, and the momentum seemed to carry over despite allowing the Rovers to tie things up at one in the top of the third. A bobble on a routine ground ball allowed the leadoff hitter to reach base, and three batters and a couple of stolen bases later Brockway brought in its only run - unearned - of the game.
The Lady Bisons immediately fired back, as Luzier led off the bottom of the inning with a bunt single. Megan Butler followed her with a walk and Ashley Lias reached on a fielder's choice, before a ground ball moved the runners to second and third.
With two outs and an 0-1 count, Julie Colesar knocked the pitch into left field, driving in two runs for the 3-1 lead that Rowles would never even threaten to lose.
"(Julie Colesar) came through and did a good job," Dixon said. "She's a good ballplayer."
Rowles struck out Brockway's leadoff batter in the fourth, and a nice defensive play by Luzier got a key second out. A hard grounder by Brockway's Cinnamon Monteville looked destined for the outfield, but Luzier ranged to her left before snagging the ball and tossing over to first in time for the out. The next two batters reached base, but Rowles closed the Rovers down with a strikeout for the final out of the inning.
Suzie Colesar got things started in the bottom of the fourth inning with a leadoff single, and another base hit by Sarah Kovalick two batters later drove Colesar in to make the score 4-1.
From there Rowles went to work, and the Lady Bisons scored some more insurance runs in the sixth inning to pad the lead at 6-1.
Some defensive miscues by the Rovers set things up for Clearfield, as an error by the shortstop allowed Suzie Colesar to reach base, and by the time Brockway had control of the ball, Colesar was standing on second base. Kenzie McGovern picked up a walk next, and a passed ball allowed both runners to advance.
After a groundout by Kovalick brought Suzie Colesar home, Luzier flied out to right field, and McGovern charged home as the throw came in. Catcher Emilee Ruff corralled the throw but never gained control, and some stutter-stepping by McGovern tangled up the waiting Brockway catcher enough for her to drop the ball and allow McGovern to score the final run of the game.
"Her dance on that tag (play) was nice," Dixon said. "She came in, stopped, started again, got to the catcher, stopped, took two steps on around her and scored."
The win pushed the Lady Bisons to 3-2 on the season as they gear up for the second of three games this week, hosting Sheffield on Wednesday.
